December 10
Connor's family had gone home. Connor had fallen asleep ages ago. Hadleigh was in her incubator all the way in the NICU. Troye, though, he couldn't sleep.
He had such a wild day. He woke up in a motel out in a place he had never heard of on his way to spend Christmas with his boyfriend's family, and was going to bed a father. To think that this time last year, Troye was on again/off again with Connor. Now, they were both parents to the most beautiful little girl in the world.Troye had been on his phone researching about having a preemie. Seeing Hadleigh in the incubator was heartbreaking, but he knew it was the best thing for her.
The way she turned to face Troye even though she was sleeping was fascinating. She heard his voice. It was alluring to her. "Hi, Hadleigh! It's Dad. I love you so much. I need to go, because the nurse over there told me I could have 5 minutes. I hope you have good dreams tonight, Hadleigh. I'll be thinking about you. I probably won't be able to stop thinking about you. I love you."
Troye put his hands on the glass of the rectangle that encompassed her. He heard her soft whimper, almost as though she was aware Troye needed to leave her, and she didn't want that.
"Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to leave now." Said the tall and scary nurse that restricted Troye's time with his daughter. "It's already been five minutes?"
The nurse repeated what she said, oblivious to Troye's plight for more time. Dr. Stewart caught a glance at Troye walking away, turning back every few steps at the sleeping baby behind him.
"What's going on here?" Asked Dr. Stewart to the tall and scary nurse of the NICU. Dr. Stewart smiled at Troye. He knew that she knew well what was going on, and her smile reassured him that he wouldn't have to say goodbye quite yet.
"I...um...well...he wanted to see one of the babies, but it's,uh, late hours right now and we're trying to get all the babies down to sleep..."
The nurse, who Troye later was told was named Nurse Hopkington, was tense. She was nervous, knowing that Dr. Stewart did not have a look of approval on her, as Troye concluded, resting happy face.
"Troye, you can stay a little longer, but please do be quiet, we are trying to get the babies to go to sleep. I know, however, you will want to stay forever, which we can't allow, so you know that we can give you a limited time here."
Troye nodded and proceeded back where he had just came to see the sleeping baby in the last incubator of the second row, his baby Hadleigh. His baby. Troye still could barely believe the sleeping baby with tubes in her nose and wires coming from her chest was their baby.
Troye smiled seeing the sleeping little girl still asleep. "I'm back baby." He smiled, the corners of his mouth rising up his cheek, exposing his teeth, squinting his eyes. He really truly do love her.
Dr. Stewart made her way over to the elated father. "You want to reach your hand in? I'll let'cha." Troye gave the wondering gaze up at her like he did when she elbowed his shoulder only a few hours ago.
"Really?" Troye asked, the twinkle in his eye growing at her light nod and grin. She opened a hole into the side, and told him to reach his hand in the incubator.
True, he had already held his baby a couple hours back, but be missed her. Hadleigh's itty-bitty figures curled over his pointer, not even making it all the way around his finger. Troye was so in awe at her every move that he felt numb. The only other person he loved this much was Connor, but he didn't love Connor in the same way.
The way he loved Connor took time to develop. Connor he loved in an inexplicable way, the way he loved Connor was sexual and romantic. Hadleigh's love was inexplicably unique. He loved her the way all parents love their children. It was a whole new feeling for Troye, and he finally knew what his parents truly felt when they told him that they'll always love him even if he was gay.
He knew what they meant because that's how he felt about Hadleigh. He loves her so much already, and would love her no matter what happened, and even though he couldn't explain this feeling, he knew that he didn't have to. He didn't have to explain it, because he would make sure she knew it.
