DAVE'S WORDS OF WISDOM # 37

------------------------------

Near Tokyo lived a great Samurai, now old, who decided to teach Zen Buddhism to young people.

One afternoon, a warrior – known for his complete lack of scruples – arrived there. The young and impatient warrior had never lost a fight. Hearing of the Samurai’s reputation, he had come to defeat him, and increase his fame.

All the students were against the idea, but the old man accepted the challenge.

All gathered on the town square, and the young man started insulting the old master. He threw a few rocks in his direction, spat in his face, shouted every insult under the sun – he even insulted his ancestors.

For hours, he did everything to provoke him, but the old man remained impassive. At the end of the afternoon, by now feeling exhausted and humiliated, the impetuous warrior left.

Disappointed by the fact that the master had received so many insults and provocations, the students asked: “How could you bear such indignity? Why didn’t you use your sword, even knowing you might lose the fight, instead of displaying your cowardice in front of us all?”

“If someone comes to you with a gift, and you do not accept it, who does the gift belong to?” – asked the old Samurai.

“He who tried to deliver it.” – replied one of his disciples.

“The same goes for envy, anger and insults.” – said the master. “When they are not accepted, they continue to belong to the one who carried them.”

@@@: A couple of uploads back i asked you guys to tell me what does being a role model mean to you, how do you define being a role model? i think it is only fair that i answer my own question to you all. I was thinking of it for quite some times before i asked and i wanted to know what it meant to others. To me, i think a role model in this day and age is someone who makes mistake but can acknowledge that they did and thrive their best to not do it again.

I was thinking of that after i read a comment on Facebook from a mother telling Beyonce that her new album sucks and she is being a bad role model for her daughter by making such a sexual and sensual album. I laughed because they put celebrities on such a high pedestal that they forget that they are the ones who should be the role models for their children and even then that celebrities are not perfect. Yes some of what they do can be look at as something you should thrive to achieve, but beyond that they are just as human as all of us. The only difference is that all their mistakes are being dissected under  the watchful eyes of billions of people and it sucks.

I also think a role model only have to be what you want it to be. It can be either someone you want to be like or someone you use as an example of what you never want to become. We all always have someone in our life that we look up to, just like there always is a person that we never want to end up like. I think that person can be a role model of what we thrive to never be.

In the end, that is what i believe. But if you have a role model in your life, just remember to never place them on a pedestal that is like a skyscraper because when they fall from it, you will be the one hurt from disappointment. Look up to them but always remember that they will make mistakes; what makes them a good role model is if they acknowledge the said mistake and thrive to do better. NOW THAT'S A GOOD ROLE MODEL!!!

FAMILY: It isn't always about the people in your life who are blood relations. It's about the people in your life who want you to be in theirs. It's about the people in your life who accept you for who you are, support you in the things you choose to do and no matter what are there for you. It's the people in your life who love you, respect you and who you can depend on. Now That's FAMILY.
