It wasn't long before the street lights began thinning out along the sides of the road and the houses turned to pastures and then forest. I couldn't bring myself to stop, even when I reached the next town. I wouldn't feel comfortable in the confines of my parents pack.
I no longer felt safe.
The mind numbing quietness soon grew too loud as the horrible scenes I had just witnessed played over and over in my head.
My fingers moved hastily to the dials on the cars radio. Fumbling with the knobs I turned them around and around looking for a station. I was in my car but everything felt foreign. Everything felt wrong.
In my frustration I hit the dash a couple of times and a sudden crackle rang out over the airwaves before a voice began talking.
The time flashed across the small digital screen. It had been a couple hours already. By now I was sure someone would have shown up to my parents house. The huge beast was making so much noise there was no way it would have gotten away with it.
Outside grew windy as the trees swayed in the sudden uproar. Though the radio played I still heard the loud crack of thunder crashing over head. Soon. The sky lit up with a the splendour of a million volts but died just as quickly. I had always been fascinated by storms but as the skies opened and rain began falling it felt as if the Moon Goddess was crying for me.
"Breaking news this morning from the town of Hillington." The man on the radio sounded sombre and sad, "police were called to a domestic disturbance on Breakers Close early this morning and upon entering the premises found the bodies of a man, woman and what is believed to be their three sons." The instant stab of pain to my heart was intense and unavoidable. My brothers too had been killed? What kind of monster would kill children?! "At this stage police are not commenting on how exactly this family met such tragedy but they are yet to locate the body of the fourth child and believe she has been abducted." If they thought I'd been abducted that meant they would be looking for me soon. I wasn't quite sure if that was a good thing or not. I still didn't know who killed my family. "We will keep you updated as details come to light."
Pounding the dash again silence returned to the car as I fought to keep my vision clear of tears. It was hard to do when my entire world had been ruthlessly torn to shreds.
Driving through a winding gulley the road followed the natural curves of the hills one one side and sloped gently into paddocks and sparse forests on the other side. I had very little time to take in the beauty of it though as I felt my car suddenly shunted to the side.
Thinking I'd taken my eyes off of the road for too long I took one hand off of the steering wheel to wipe the window and clear it of some of the condensation. Sitting back my feet panicked and tried desperately to find the break pedal. A tree sat directly in my path as the car dropped over the side of the bank and down a gentle slope. I had no time to swerve and miss it so stuck my hands up in front of my face to brace for impact.
My head snapped forward before being shoved back by the deploying airbags. My body strained against the safety belt as the car hit the tree slightly more on the passenger's side. With my face pressed against the hard inflated white bag my ears began ringing. My vision became blurry and my head rang with pain.
What the hell had shunted me off of the road? I knew I hadn't imagined it.
Terror gripped me like a gloved hand as the thought of the monstrous wolf roaming around outside my car circled through my head.
In the blink of an eye the drivers side door was torn from its hinges and tossed to the side like trash. Turning my head I could barely see through my blurred vision. It wasn't the monster I thought it would be but I knew I was far from safety.
"Well looky here. We have an intruder," Though the man spoke clearly I could barely hear a thing.
Soon the seatbelt that had saved my life was torn from my body and I was roughly yanked from the vehicle. To my relief it wasn't the monster I was expecting but the man that held me by the scruff of my shirt didn't look friendly at all.
Passing out in his grasp I hoped and prayed that I didn't wake. I was more than afraid of what I'd wake up to.
