A sharp squeak erupted from Stephanie's mouth, her eyes widening as she turned rapidly to discover a familiar young man standing before her. He was leaning in with a wide grin, just inches from her face. She scoffed, looking deeply into the dark brown eyes she had gotten far too familiar with.
"Matthew? Again? What now?"
She flinched at her own words, never meaning to sound so harsh. She didn't exactly dislike him, no, that wasn't it. When they had first met a few years prior at the Pokemon Academy she was rather scared of him. He's certainly not intimidating, she thought, looking at his cheery grin and his relaxed posture, but he was decidedly a bit of a stalker, trailing her around the school during lunch and after classes, trying to start conversations with her. She wasn't the lying type. It was ridiculously unsettling to be followed by a random theatre kid who she only knew because they had one class together. Stephanie wasn't sure at what point she had grown used to it, but around that time she made the executive decision to try and get to know him better.
As it turned out, he was actually rather nice and quite intelligent. Not that what he did was at all acceptable, but she figured he would be an alright friend to keep around.
"Well? Are you going to talk or just ogle me a little more?"
Matthew's eyes widened and a pink flush spread across his face, putting a hand to the nape of his neck and shaking his head.
"Ogle? I'm not...I wouldn't..."
"Really? I was kidding Matthew. Learn to distinguish an accusation from a joke."
"What? Oh, yeah of course.." A weak laugh escaped his lips. "I was just wondering what's got you so happy."
Stephanie smiled sweetly and he felt his neck burn. "Well, that should be obvious! Today you and I become proper adults! We get to explore the world, wander the forests, groves..."
She continued rambling, hands making wild gestures, caramel eyes twinkling. He allowed her a quick moment of exhilaration before grabbing her forearm.
"Get to the point, shrimp."
She rolled her eyes. "We get to pick our very own Pokemon! Don't tell me you're not excited."
Matthew gave his shoulders a little shrug. "Well, of course. Don't talk to me like I'm 5, Stephanie. I'm still older than you are. What do you think you'll be getting?"
She responded with a dismissive hand gesture, swatting away his opinions.
"I mean, they have a daycare at the back of the lab. Let's be honest, there are tons of options. I guess I'll choose whichever one speaks to me."
He looked at her in awe and touched her shoulder.
"That was deep."
She grinned triumphantly.
"Okay, that's enough. No gloating."
She pouted and shook his hand off of her shoulder.
"We should get going." Matthew huffed, looking around, avoiding her wandering gaze, beginning to walk down the familiar dirt road.
"We?" Stephanie asked in amusement, trailing alongside him with a devious grin.
"Yes, we." He said with a huff of finality. "Now hurry up, slowpoke."
She smiled as she walked alongside him, rather content. Perhaps she should give him a bit more of a chance. He's very sweet after all.
Yes, maybe she'd-
"I said hurry up! What're you waiting for?"
Never mind.
