As children, Mal and Mackenzie had been best friends. They were Bonnie and Clyde, Harry and Ron, tight as two peas in a pod. But all children fight, and not even the most angelic ones can escape punishment. But Mackenzie could. Mackenzie  was the one who broke the antique coffee table in an indoors game of kickball, which was also her idea. She was the one who tried to stop Mackenzie jumping off the roof at age six. True, her sister was the one with a broken rib and arm, but Mal was the one who was thoroughly spanked and couldn't eat for two days.

At seven, Mackenzie was already an accomplished liar, but Mallory could usually see through her webs. Mostly because Mackenzie always pinned the blame on her. There was a time when Mackenzie had owned up to the stuff that was her fault, but Catherine quickly discouraged that. During that kickball game, their mother worried over if Mackenzie had scratched herself on one of the sharp shards of the decimated table, then quickly switched to rage; all pointed at Mallory. When Mackenzie tried her flying stunt, Mallory was the one who was locked inside the closet for two days while Catherine took Mackenzie to the hospital and made sure she received the best of everything.

Mackenzie was the princess, and Mallory was the frog. But in this case, the frog wasn't going to live a happily ever after.

As they grew up, Mackenzie ... well... to be brutally honest, Mackenzie was a spoiled rotten bitch that could rival Regina George for the title of Popular Queen That Ruled By Fear. But Mallory.... Mallory was worse.

Oh, she got average grades, and the teachers liked her well enough, and she had friends who were neither nerds or queens. She was never picked last but never first for teams of any kind, and she was adequate at the piano. Everyone knew her as "Mackenzie's Sister", so she wasn't bullied...

But at age eleven and 2 months, Mallory knew for sure that she hated her sister.
