"Calm down," I assured her. She took a deep breath before telling me everything at once. It took me a while before I digested the information fully.
"What?" I felt my blood starting to boil. "How in the world do you think I would calm down?"
"You have to understand," she said calmly, shaking her head. "I forgave him because I love him."
"You are so stubborn!" I said rubbing my temples before standing up. "How can you forgive him when all he's done is hurt you over and over again?"
"He only cheated on me three times." she argued.
"Tthree? Camila! Once should have been enough! And don't even start on how he was drunk because he was sober on the other two occasions!" I lashed out.
"Still. He was mentally exhausted." she reasoned out.
"What the hell, Mila, you make no sense! Do you even hear yourself? How can you even-?"
"What?" she screamed, interrupting me. "How do you think I'm able to forgive him over and over when all he did was to hurt me!? Well, what do you think? They say you would do anything for the ones you love so the answer is quite simple, Shawn. I forgave him because I love him." she said before hanging up.
I slammed the phone on the desk, "Mom!" I yelled out. "I'm going out."
"Sure honey, but be back for dinner." she called out from the kitchen. My blood was boiling as I accidentally slammed the door behind me. I took my cell and dialed Hailee. "Hello? Yeah...I was wondering...are you free right now?"
---
I strode pass a couple of old people at the park before spotting Hailee sitting in one of the benches. "Hey," I greeted. "Hey, everything alright? You seem upset, what's wrong?" she asked.
I sat beside her and told her everything--well, almost everything. I had left out the part where I had feelings for my best friend. She listened carefully, her face changing when I said certain things. All the while, I was like staring blankly at her face. The words seem to have a mind of their own and what I was saying didn't even register to me until I was done.
"Look, Shawn," she said gently putting her hand on top of mine, "Mila, she's just confused. Try to give her space. Let her work this out on her own. But after cheating three times? That's just damn straight ridiculous."
I gave her a questioned and irritated look. "Right!?" She sighed, "Look, I know this will sound super ridiculous but I think you need to give Camila some space. Sure, you two have been best friends for who knows how long but I can tell you love her and want to protect her from Cameron. I understand that part very well. I would too. But the thing is, you don't just love her, you're in love with her."
My eyes widened in surprise as I was at a loss for words. "How? I never told anyone.", I felt my cheek reddened. "Was it that obvious?"
"Not really," she slowly shoved her hands into the pocket of her black leather jacket.
"Then how did you know?", my voices sounded anxious. If Hailee noticed it after a few days of getting to know me then wouldn't Camila have already figured it out? Was she dating Cameron to tell me that she has absolutely no interest in me? If Camila really knew, was this what kept her away from me?
"Because you look at her the way I look at you.", her eyes started tearing up. "I'm sorry," she stood up. "But I have to go."
She ran before me and I could only stare blankly, letting the words slowly sink in.
---
It was 12am and my phone started beeping. It was Hailee.
I went to the computer to check things with Mila.
Still nothing.
I'd left a message earlier. It said, 'Mila, I'm sorry. I'm doing my best to understand you. So, I'm giving you space.'
