warnings: mentions of mental illness, mentions of abuse.
"Hello. This is Fiona from Stillwater Mental Institute. Is this Troye Mellet?" She asks, and Troye has a confused look on his face. "Y-yes. What is this about?" He asks, curiously. "James Pinnock." She answers. Troye's jaw drops to the floor, and he is completely silent. "Are you still there, Mr. Mellet?" She chirps, and Troye hears the tap of keyboard keys. "Y-yes." Troye whispers, and she continues on. "Well, James doesn't have any family members, and your contact information is in his portfolio. I wanted to let you know that he will be coming home. Do you still live at the same address?" She asks. "No. I don't go to Yale anymore..." He mutters, and she types something into her computer.
"So, Mr. Mellet, where are you living? I need to know where Mr. Pinnock will be living now." She announces, and Troye feels his breath hitch. "J-James... He's in... How? What's wrong with him?" Troye asks. "Well, he has bipolar disorder, and severe anger. He also has developed depression, and uh... An eating disorder." She lists, and Troye sighs. "His mother and father... Where are they?" He asks. "They are unable to house him, because they disowned them because of his sexuality." She announces, and Troye sighs.
"I-uh... So I have to have him live with me?" Troye asks. "Well, yes. You're listed here as his boyfriend. We need you to pick him up, and you two will need to live together for at least six months to a year, so he can get re adjusted." She says in a monotone voice. "He is not able to live alone, because of his mental state. He is harmless, at least we are convinced of that. If you can't take him, he will go into a group home for recovering mental patients, which isn't the best environment..." She trails off, and Troye has to quickly decide what to do.
"I... Uh... I guess I can take him in. Where exactly is the facility?" He inquires, as he grabs a pen and paper. "It is in New York City. I can email you the address or you can google us. Everyone does it these days anyways..." She trails off, and Troye nods his head, knowing that she cannot see his actions.
"Okay... When should I pick him up..." He trails off, and she interrupts him. "Monday." She announces, and Troye nods his head, knowing he has to book a flight. He hangs up the phone, sitting down, realizing what just happened.
He was allowing his abusive ex boyfriend back into his life. In fact, he was going to be living with him. More importantly, how will Connor feel about this?
-
"He's what?" Connor gasps, and Troye looks to the ground.
Now, Troye hadn't necessarily told Connor everything about James. Just that he was his ex boyfriend and that he left. Nothing about the abuse, the scars he had because of him.
"James is uh... He's coming back. To live with me. Only for a while, until he gets... Er... Sorted?" Troye says, and Connor closes his eyes, inhaling sharply.
"So, you're just allowing your ex boyfriend to live with you just because he can't get his shit together? Troye you don't have to do this!" Connor protests, and Troye shakes his head slowly. "I-I can't pull out. I have made a commitment." Troye sighs, and Connor just frowns. "Troye if you're just gonna let people walk all over you, how do you expect me to trust you to keep our relationship a secret?" Connor protests, his arms moving for emphasis.
"What does that even have to do with it?" Troye yells, then covers his mouth, eyes widening. "If you just let people walk all over you like that, let them do whatever they want, how should I expect you to not do the same if someone were to ask about our relationship?" Connor argues.
Sadly, Troye was defeated. He could see where Connor was coming from. He had a good argument.
"I-I..." Troye begins, his lower lip wobbling. Connor stands up from his desk, turning his body away from Troye, toward the window. "I think we need to... Take a break." Connor states, voice shaky as ever. "B-but..." Troye begins, and Connor turns his body, looking to Troye with a hurt look in his eyes.
"I want to trust you, Troye. I really do. But your ex boyfriend is going to be living with you and I just don't know how to trust you." He whispers, voice wavering. Troye blinks, standing up slowly. "O-okay. If that's how you feel..." He trails off, as he leaves the room, tears clouding his vision.
As soon as he gets to his office, he slams the door shut, and the tears come. He sinks down on his chair, burying his face in his hands, wanting nothing more than to just disappear. But he can't.
Eventually, he gets back to work, and books his flight for the following afternoon to go pick up James. He was scared of what James might be like, how he would be, if he would be the same or different than he was one year ago.

"This is a list of numbers you can call if you have issues with James, and this form here is the one you need to sign." The lady, Emma, says in a sweet tone. "What's this one for?" Troye questions, motioning to one that had a lot of bold writing on it.
"Oh, that's the one that states that you will not hold us accountable if James were to... Harm you." She speaks, making Troye's eyes widen. "Harm me? You think he could harm me?" Troye asks, and Emma shrugs.
"From what I'm reading, he seems to be alright, but with all patients, we must be careful, as they could be potentially very dangerous." She says in a soft voice, and Troye gapes at her calm attitude toward this.
How was he supposed to allow someone to live in his home who could potentially harm him? Would he have to hide all the sharp objects in fear that James might just stab him to death in his sleep?
"Mr. Mellet?" Emma calls, and Troye shakes out of it, signing the papers wordlessly, and without thinking. "I will have Lea here bring you to James. It is quiet time right now, so all of the patients are in their rooms, including James. There's no need to be afraid of them." She coos, and Troye nods his head slowly, following the brunette lady.
"Y-you don't think he'll hurt me, do you?" Troye asks, and Lea smiles sadly at him. "It's hard to say, honey." She soothes, as she walks down the long hallway, scanning her employee card on a door that said "McKinley Hall". This was where James was.
The two arrive at James' room, and Lea knocks on his door. "Mr. Pinnock? It's time for you to leave now." Lea announces, and James opens the door, his blue eyes meeting Troye's. "T-Troye?" He whispers, then takes the tall boy into a tight hug. "I missed you so much." He whispers against Troye's neck, and Troye sighs, taking in his ex lover's scent.
He realizes just how much he missed James, but he was not allowing himself to fall back into James' trap.
