Chapter Two- My Own Funeral

A triumphant grin spreads across my face when Blaze tells me we can begin training. I walk over to the huge selection of weapons, expecting Blaze to let me handle them.

“What do you think you’re doing?” I hear Blaze ask. He sounds extremely annoyed. I turn around to see him heading up a set of stairs.

“C’mon,” he mutters and I slowly follow him up the stairs. At the top of the stairs is what looks like a fancy, dark lounge. There are a few black chairs in the middle of the room and bookshelves line the walls.

“What are we doing?” I ask, my eyes searching the room. Blaze strides over to the middle of the room and plops into one of the black couches.

“Training.” He grabs a book close to him and tosses it over to me. I catch the book and glare at Blaze.

“You’ve gotta be kidding me! I want to train with actual weapons. Reading is a waste of time,” I complain, letting the book fall to the ground.

“A waste of what time? We have forever.” He kicked his feet up onto the coffee table across from the couch and picked up a different book. He began reading while I scowled at him.

“Come on. This isn’t fair-“

“Fair? You think life is fair? ‘Cause it’s not. Now shut up and quit whining. Pick up that book and start reading,” Blaze snarled. I glared at him for a few seconds longer before picking up the book. It was one of the largest books I’d ever seen in my life and had a thin layer of dust collected on the cover.

I threw the book at Blaze and turned, running down the stairs. This was all too much to process. I had just died and became a Demon, and my mentor was a pain in the ass. I needed a break, I needed to think.

I bolted out of the apartment complex, slamming the door loudly behind me. I began running down the dark street, unsure of where I was going to go. At least it stopped raining.

I expected to hear Blaze chasing after me, but he never did. That ticked me off even more. I forced myself not to let any tears escape my eyes as I turned a corner and kept running, never getting tired.

The street I turned onto was completely empty, with no one outside except for me. I slowed down a little, catching my breath but still lightly jogging. I heard footsteps coming from behind me, so I quickly glanced back. Thankfully there was no one there, but I ended up running into someone in front of me.

“Oh, I’m so sorry!” I exclaimed, stumbling backwards. I looked at the person I had run into and my eyes narrowed. It was Alex.

“Watch where you’re going, doll face,” Alex smirked, stopping in front of me. I rolled my eyes at him and began walking past him.

“Hey, wait,” he called out, running after me. I ignored him and kept walking. He came up next to me, matching my long strides.

“What happened?” he asked after a moment of silence. I shook my head and clenched my teeth together.

“Listen. Blaze is a really tough guy, so it’s okay for you to be frustrated. He takes some getting used to. He can be an asshole,” Alex admitted with a chuckle.

“Yeah, I can tell,” I muttered grimly. It was quiet for a minute or so more before I broke the silence.

“Do you think I could get a new mentor?” I asked, peering at Alex. He let out a sigh and bit his lip attractively.
