"Do not pay attention to Kale, he is all bark, with barely any bite. Sometimes I wonder how on earth in this whole universe, we ended up being cousins.." Rhys sighed and looked in the direction where Kale disappeared. He shook his head and looked back.
"What? That's your cousin... Unbelievable."
"I know, right.. But, lets not talk about him right now. I want to know about you. I can't believe that you actually came to this school. I was beginning to think I would never see you again." His eyes was as bright as that night she saw him on the beach, but he was now clean shaven! And he surely wasn't smelling like sea salt...
"Yeah, I convinced my mom! She wanted to send me to a private school. I hated the girls school I was at before. At least here I can see a few cute boys..."
His face lit up, but playful suspicion danced in his expression, "Oh really? And here I thought that you came here to see me!
"Yeah yeah, that too!"
The bell rang, and both of them rolled their eyes, it was seeming that whenever they got the chance to talk, there was an interruption...
They were the last to make it to class. Rhys held open the class door, she walked inside and was met by quite a few curious eyes, including Kale's death glare.
"—Hera was jealous, and had put Hercules under a spell. So basically –" He stopped talking when Rhys entered the room after Gwen.
"Sorry... Won't happen again." Rhys said as he quickly made his way to his seat, gesturing at the open seat next to him for Gwen. She also sat down quickly. Cassie was sitting behind her and held her hand behind her chair, a note folded between her fingers. All the while the teacher did not take his eyes off Gwen, by this time his brows were forrowed as if he was to deep in thought to realise he was in the middle of a lesson.
"Mr Blake? Are you alright?" A pretty blonde girl asked in the front row of the class. It was clear that her interest in his well being was a little more than just student teacher...
"Yes, fine.." His eyes moved to Cassie and Hayden before it landed on Gwen, and he picked up a book from a stack on his table, making his way over to her table.
He put the study guide infront of her, almost slamming it into the table, causing her to flinch.
"To all new students, I already said it, but to those who appearantly wasn't listening, there will be no texting in class, and NO note passing. Got it?" This time he didn't look at Gwen as he walked back to his table.
He took the chalk and wrote something down on the blackboard, then turned back to the class.
"THE TWELVE LABORS OF HERCULES / DODEKATHLON—
Test on Monday!!"
The whole class broke out in a choir of 'Aww's...
"Now, where was I?"
"At the part where Hercules was driven to insanity by the jealous Hera!" Little miss blonde infront almost yelled out. Yeah, it was clear now, she just wanted Mr.Blake's undying approval and devotion for herself... It almost wanted to make Gwen puke.
"Ah yes, thanks Lily. While Hercules was in this state of insanity, what exactly did he do?"
"He murdered his wife and children." She heard Rhys speak next to her, and couldn't help but look to her side, he seemed very interested in the lesson.
"Good! Now Hercules deeply regretted this right? So, what happened after he 'awoke' from this temporary insanity?"
"He prayed to the god Apollo, and got told to serve Eurystheus, who was human... Hercules loathed the idea..." Rhys answered again, the enthusiasm she saw on his face told her he was a bit more than just into the subject... An 'A' student aswell? Impressive...
"Very good Rhys, you did your homework" For the first time she aaw the faintest smile on Mr.Blake's face. "Now, for the good part. The twelve labours, or the Dodekathlon, who can tell me a bit more about it?"
"The Nemean Lion, a fierce, invulnerable, and feared lion around the hills of Nemea. Slaying this beast was his first labour." A guy with glasses, and short spikey brown hair, at the far end of the class spoke, "but it was soon realised that his arrows alone tutned out to be useless against the beast. So Hercules tracked the lion through this cave, and when he found it, he strangled it! It is unsure whether the skin of the lion Hercules wore in so many ancient depictions was really the skin of the Nemean Lion."
"Thank you Juan, that was, very insightful.." He spoke of more details concerning the Nemlion, or whatever it was, but Gwen was so bored that she didn't hear most of it...
Finally, after what seemed like hours, he closed the book and looked down at his watch, then at the students again. "Remember to study hard for the test on Monday, and remember to thank Miss Cassie over there, I am not to blame if you do not listen." Just as he finished, the bell rang.
On her way out of class, she had the priviledge of bumping into someone, but as she looked up, her boredom turned into horror, two dark eyes were now glaring at her... "I am going to say this once, next time, I am smashing your dumb little blonde brains against a wall... Watch where you are going, b*tch!" He screamed in her face so much that she could feel his spit literally penetrating her pores... The tears was close to bursting out of her eyes, when she saw his eyes widen with semi-fear, semi-shock.
Someone was standing behind her. "Kale Wesley, if I ever hear you talking to someone like that in my class again, or in this school, I will have you expelled, or.. I could even talk to your dad, I am sure he would be happy to hear that his model son is making progress, right?"
"I'm sorry, Mr Blake, I—"
"I am not the one you should be apologising too Kale, come on, I know you better than this."
"Oh really? You only remember a 10 year old! Well, I am not 10 years old anymore, and I am most definitely not apologising to someone who can't keep their f*cking eyes open!" Kale stormed out of class without looking back, and only seconds later Rhys was by her side, so was Mr Blake.
"Are you alright Gwen? I am sorry that he mistreated you like that, he is a very troubled kid. Don't even pay attention to him." Mr Blake put a hand on her shoulder and gave a gentle squeeze before going at sitting behind his desk again.
She turned to Rhys, who immediately opened his arms to comfort her. She was shaking slightly. "I need to get out of here, I need a break, lets just go outside for a while, please.."
"Shh.. It's okay, let's just get out of here..." He took her hand and they walked out the main enterance of the school, sitting down on the steps. Gwen took a deep breath to calm herself down. How on earth did life get so horrible in one day?
"I am so sorry about what he said, I am sure he didn't mean it. His life is just very complicated, and he takes it out on everyone around him."
"I did nothing to deserve this!"
"Ofcourse you didn't Gwen, Kale is just a natural jerk. But, he wasn't always like this."
She heard footsteps behind them and turned around. It was Cassie and Hayden. "Hey you guys, we were thinking, maybe we could meet up for lunch at the cafeteria, just chill out for a while?"
"Yeah sure, that would be cool!" As horrible as things got, she was actually lucky to meet some good people who could balance out the bad... "Yeah, we will meet you guys there" Rhys smiled, and gave Gwen's hand a squeeze.
After the other two left, he leaned into her, at first she thought he wanted to kiss her, but he smiled instead. "I am glad to see you are feeling better." he held her cheek and gave her forehead a kiss instead. Total let down. She really thought— oh what was she thinking? She didn't need the extra complication...
