(After City of Heavenly Fire, before Lady Midnight)

CRACK! The demon fell to its knees as my whip slashed across its chest. An arch of ichor exploded through the air, falling in a  sizzling hailstorm around my head.

It crumbled to dust, a fine powder that clung to my shoes. I shifted, annoyed. My shoes were new. When I heard the second demon's footstep behind me, I was more than happy to spin around and drive the stiletto's heel straight through it's chest. It fell as well, joining its neighbor on the ground.

I vaulted over the piles of dust and kicked out, aiming for the third and last demon that wasn't fighting one of my teammates.

I landed square on it's shoulders with my fingers, my legs swinging around to slam into its back. It squawked in surprise and veered forwards. I leapt away as it crashed to the ground. To finished it, I flicked my whip free of my wrist. The golden coils ensnared its head. With a quick jerk, it was dead.

"Not bad," Alec said, shouldering his bow. He was my brother, and about as different from me as night and day. Of course, I was night, but Alec had a nocturnal streak as well. It came from our occupation.

"I was marvelous," I smiled.

"Quit the banter," Alec sighed, "This feels weird without Clary and Jace."

"They're on a Clave meeting for the stuffy Institute bas-"

"Watch your language."

I rolled my eyes, "The Institute people. I'm sure they'd much rather be out here with us, hunting. Those were Scarab Demons, weren't they?"

"Yeah," Alec bit his lip, "Apparently they're rare, but Magnus and I had a run-in with them in Egypt." Had I mentioned? Alec's boyfriend was Magnus Bane, High Warlock of Manhattan. He was one of our best sources for magic and information— everything from ridiculously rare demonology to the best place to wear glitter (i.e. Everywhere).

"What are they doing so far from Egypt, then?" I asked.

"That is an excellent point." Alec frowned. "Do you think we could track them?"

I grinned, cocking a hip. "You know it."
