Isabelle
When I got ready for school and went downstairs, I could hear laughter from the kitchen. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion and curiosity. I could already identify that my mom was one of the people who were laughing. The other person sounded oddly familiar, it sounded like a guy.I walked into the kitchen to see my mom and Kyle sitting on the bar stools whilst eating and chatting about something. My mom had a huge smile plastered on her face, and Kyle was grinning. When mom noticed me, her smile widened.
"Isabelle!" She chirped. She almost sounded like a freaking bird. "I was just talking to Kyle here. He's so charming and lovely."
I raised a brow. "Him? Charming?" I walked up to Kyle and he was still grinning like a fool. I grabbed an apple from the fruit bowl, sitting on the only bar stool available, which just happened to be next to Kyle.
"Yeah." Kyle smugly said. I narrowed my eyes at him.
"He told me about last night." Mom said, quite seriously. I stilled. Did Kyle tell mom about what I told him? 'Cause if he did, then I wouldn't get the end of it from her.
"Last night? What about last night?" I asked.
"How you let me crash.." Kyle trailed on, and I let out a breath.
"Oh, yeah, that."
"It was nice of you to welcome him." Mom genuinely smiled.
"Right."
"Kyle, I told your mom, I'm sure you did too, but I just texted her to make sure. She said that she's back home and you can go to get ready for school now." Mom looked down at her phone, I think she was reading what Kirsty texted her.
"Thanks Mrs. Nicholson." Kyle said, standing up.
I froze. "Ms." I quietly said, and Kyle looked at me with confusion across his face.
"Huh?"
"It's Ms. Nicholson." I looked at him, and then mom. Her smile vanished and I could see the sadness flicker in her eyes for a few seconds.
"Oh." Kyle said.
"It's okay." Mom smiled, but I knew this time it wasn't genuine. "Bye, Kyle."
"Uh.. Yeah. Bye. Thanks again, Isabelle, for you know, letting me stay."
"It's fine." I said, and when he left, a huge silence settled between mom and me. I drank two cups of coffee - I literally threw the coffee down my throat - and after that, I texted Kyle. I had to, and since he had put his number in my phone, I decided to ask if he was outside yet.
When he replied ten minutes later - mom and I still hadn't said anything - I grabbed my bag and headed for the front door. But before I left, I said. "Bye mom." I didn't get a response, and I knew why. I just sighed and left my house before climbing into Kyle's car.
On the way, Kyle, being the curious idiot he is, asked, "Is your dad.. You know... Are your parents divorced?" He just came out and said it.
I didn't say anything, I just looked out of the window. "Ugh, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked that." Kyle groaned.
I again, didn't say anything. When we reached school, Blake was already there, waiting for Kyle. Meaning he was going to talk to me as well. Ugh.
