Stretch

Hadessa was always the smallest. As well with being the shortest and weakest Viking, of course besides the newborn babes on Berk, her homeland. She always had one physical trait that most Vikings seemed to not to have, flexibility.

From a small age, her mother, encouraged her to stretch her scrawny limbs which stretched with ease and allowed her to do 'tricks' that the other kids in her age group couldn't seem to do, like splits or back-bends. The other kids in her age group never knew this though, they didn't care what the 'Chief's Scrawny, Hiccup of a Daughter' did anyway, as they were too busy training to be future warriors.

Knowing the gossips and her young daughters' lack of friends, her mother was determined to secure a way for Hadessa to achieve greatness and prove herself to the tribe before she became the Chiefess of Berk and was baring some man's sons and daughters. Not that she didn't want grand babies, she just wanted her daughter to have other titles to the tribe in the future besides 'Barrier of Heirs to Berk Chiefdom'.

Finding a activity that didn't involve killing dragons was a lot harder than Valka expected. She would rather her daughter learn about the gentleness of dragons, such as her own dragon, Cloudjumper, rather than killing them. Her best hopes were that her daughter would be able to obtain the friendship of a dragon, but under Stoick's watchful eye, she was doubtful of this reality.

Valka continued her search and spent several months at home with a toddler Hadessa looking through books of noteable Vikings who had all achieved their accomplishments by killing dragons. She thought of her dear Cloudjumper and couldn't bear the thought of killing one of his kind.

By the time Hadessa had turned 4, Valka had nearly lost hope of finding something for Hadessa. But thankfully Valka was able to conclude her search. She and Stoick had gone to the annual gathering of the tribes meeting held in. Valka stood out from the other chief's wife's like a sore thumb. She had amazing sword skills, yet she never applied them to killing dragons, which was a hobby amongst all of the women, except her. Yet some gossip between Bertha of the Bog-Burglers, and Svanna of the Meathead tribe, caught her ear.
"Did you hear about the new ice slider shoe games?" Svanna asked

"Of course I 'ave! Those shoes are the new rave among us northern tribes, many remarkable youths are anticipating them" Bertha responded proudly.

Being curious as she was, Valka decided to contribute her question to the conversation.
"What are these 'ice shoes'? Valka asked.

The two women's eyes widened.
"You 'aven't 'eard of them?" Bertha asked shocked.

"I'm afraid I haven't," Valka shyly responded.

The Svanna giggled then Bertha nudged Svanna to respond to Valka.
"Oh you were serious! They are these leather boots with steel blades on them, they were made to be used for transportation across ice, but the kids these days started doing spins on the ice and twists in the air while wearing them. Quite a remarkable sport if you ask me!"

Valka was astonished, it was as if the Gods had molded this perfect moment for her. While the prospect of letting a child wear blades on their feet was a little horrifying, she would trust her daughter not to hurt herself with them. But then it hit Valka. Finally, a sport that Hadessa could possibly do, and be reconized for it! She was soon filled with much enthusiasm, she wanted to know all about the sport! And how soon could it be before she could start coaching Hadessa in it.

Hungry for more knowledge, Valka asked another question.
"Where could I learn more about these 'ice slider shoes' and these games?"

After discovering the mutual interest in ice sliding shoes and many other topics, the three women become acquainted with Valka, and eventual friends.

Valka gathered as much information as she could about the sport during and after that conversation with the two Chiefesses. She learned that the leather ice slider shoes for Hadessa and herself could be easily obtained from Trader Johan's next visit to Berk, along with books on how competitions worked and what skills would be needed in order for Hadessa to participate in them. Despite her worrying, the two Chiefesses both assured Valka that skating came easy to those who wanted to skate.

The conversation was only dimmed when Svanna had to leave. Valka and Bertha began some small talk involving their children, who happened to be the same age.
"My Cami with have to meet your 'adessa one day," Bertha proposed.

Valka smiled, "I, and on Hadessa's behalf, gladly accept your offer."

Valka and Bertha bid their farewells as it was one of the final days of the gathering and it was unlikely that they'd see each other until the next peace treaty between Berk and the Bog-Burglers' in about 4 years.

Valka walked back to her and Stoick's tent with a slight skip to her step, eager to tell him of the past days events.

She pulled open the tent to discover Stoick had not arrived at their tent yet. While she was slightly disappointed, she was used to this sad reality after several stalled chief meetings. Sighing, she got dressed in her sleeping shift and grabbed a comb that was lying on her bed and brushed her long brown locks. After a couple minutes of brushing, she put her hair in a simple plait that ran down her back, an tied it with a strip of leather.

Valka adjusted the blankets on her and Stoick's travel cot. She lied down and snuggled in the blankets and reflected on the day's events.
