This morning they finished, or he finished packing. Charlene spent the day grabbing things to pack, occasionally putting small trinkets in boxes.
"Daddy, Look." She'd found a picture of her mother. He looked at it, then his daughter. She admired it, skimming her thumb along the glass. "You miss her?" She nodded, then kissed the picture. He didn't even know she was crying until he felt the wetness on his arm. He looked down, seeing her tears run down the side of the frame.
"Baby Girl..." He picked her up. She let herself curl up in his arms, sniffling and wiping her eyes. "It's okay to cry." She let go, her lip quivering. She let out loud sobs as she clutched his shirt. "It's okay." He rubbed her back, feeling her tears seep onto his chest.
He kissed the top of her head, as he felt the burning in the back of his throat and tears threatening to fall from his eyes.
He hated seeing his baby sad, but Daddy couldn't do anything about it.
He held her tighter, letting the first tear fall. He shut his eyes, trying to keep more from escaping. She looked up at him, her big brown orbs staring into his. She wiped his tears, while he, in turn, wiped hers. "Okay to cry, Daddy."
She looped her arms around his neck and kissed the tip of his nose. "I love you, Daddy." This made him smile. "I love you, too, Baby."
