I took my phone and keys and hurried to my car. She lives quite far from me, so driving to her apartment isn't going to be easy as I am getting more and more freaked out by every passing second. I hope I am overreacting because it's only been 2 hours and 15 minutes. It's not like she's been missing or something, it's just the fact that she isn't picking up her phone that's giving me a weird feeling in my gut that I'm sure will vanish right when I get to her apartment. She'd better have a good fucking excuse for making me worry this much.
I'm only 4 blocks away now and I'm growing even more impatient. So I press my foot even more on the pedal, speeding to get to her place. I parked my car in front of the building and got inside. The minute I laid my eyes on the elevator I see somebody getting in and closing its doors, I ran but when I got there the doors already closed. "Fffuck" I muttered to myself. Well, I guess not exactly to myself, because I earned a glare from an old man that I didn't even know was there.
I went to take the stairs, climbing them up two at a time. Once I got to the 4th floor, I fast-walked to get to her apartment. I barely had the time to stand still before I knocked on her door. The first time, no one. The second time, still no one. I'm starting to get freaked out, to be honest. My hand was still on its way to knock for the third time when the door slowly opens. I bring my eyes up to meet ones that weren't Catherine's, ones that I've never met before. I'm not worried, I'm not scared. I don't know why I have a feeling that if he sees one bit of fear in my eyes I'm going to be screwed. So, I gathered my composure, relaxed my facial features and looked him straight in the eyes with the coldest look I could master. "Who are you"? I asked.
"Woah, no hello?" his deep voice made me even more scared, but he shouldn't see that. "Who are you?" I asked again as if he didn't say a word.
"I'm..her boyfriend?" he said pointing to his right with his eyebrows lifted up with a little smile playing on his lips. I moved myself a little closer to see where he pointed, my heart sunk at the sight. I don't know what is happening exactly but all I know is that I want to rip his throat out. She is tied up, dry blood under her nose and her hair is messy, it looks like it's been pulled many times. She looked at me with pleading eyes she tried talking but apparently, her voice wouldn't come out, I grew even angrier. She mouthed "go", I turned to the guy in front of me ignoring what she just said.
"Is that a question or an answer?" looking him straight in the eyes, I'm really not scared now I'm not pretending. I'm only containing my anger because if I want both of us to get out of this okay, I need to play it smart. He's probably not even alone and yelling and screaming at him won't get me anywhere except maybe being tied up next to her. "uuh I like this one" he said knitting his eyebrows and puckering his lips a little while he looked at his left. I knew he wasn't alone, fuck this is so messed up. The other guy came into view, that's when I noticed that both of them had guns fixed in their pants' waists. I'm not going to lie, my heart is pounding and I'm praying he doesn't feel that. "Well this one" pointing to myself "doesn't like you, unless you say something valuable." by now I think he's mad, not good. But I need to know why they have her and what do they want.
"Something valuable?" The other one finally spoke. "Yeah, something that will benefit both parts."
He breathed a laugh with his lips curving to one side then asked "Like?".
"What do you want? and why are you here?" I asked straight to the point, "And how would that benefit us, young lady?" he asked smiling as he was talking to an innocent 5-year-old who knows nothing about this world.
"If I know what you want, maybe I can help show you a way to get it." I said playing with a strand of my hair and looking at them with a smile playing on my lips I stole a glance at Cat while they looked at each other trying to figure out what I'm trying to say or in what can I help them. She looked shocked and there's a hint of anger towards me this time, her eyes are no longer pleading ones. I ignored it and returned my eyes back to the two men in front of me.
"In what can YOU help us?" he asked sceptically, "I know all about Catherine. I knew her since kindergarten, I'm sure there are some things that I can help you with" I smiled. It's true that we were away from each other for 7 years, but I know her well and unlike me, she tells me everything, even the little things about her day. So, I might have an idea, it might get us both killed or save her but I have no choice.
"What's in it for you?" he asked simply. "I need some money." I said with cold eyes. The man that opened the door for me laughed, "I knew you were a bitch" his eyes turned serious, "and we don't trust bitches." he added and I cringed internally at his words because I know that's probably what Catherine is thinking of me right now. "Yeah, if you sell someone you knew since kindergarten what makes you think we'll trust someone like you not to sell us." The other guy spoke again while looking me straight in the eyes. I laughed, "Trust? what does that mean?" I asked in a sarcastic tone, "Look, nobody's talking about trust here. You need something, I need something. We both walk out happy." I added with a cold look in the eyes.
"Alright, fair enough." he said and I looked at him expectantly, "get in" he added pulling my hand to jerk me away from the front door, he looked one last time left and right before closing the door.
"I still want to know. Why are you here?" I said while walking inside her apartment with both of them walking behind me. "I mean if you really wanted to kidnap her, why didn't you take her away somewhere else? why would you risk staying at her apartment?" I asked really wanting to know, it seemed stupid to me.
"Risk?" he laughed, I was confused as to why would he laugh at that, it is a risk. "Honey, we knew there is only you in this hole of a city that may probably bother us," he said with such confidence that I wanted to rip out of his face, "and here you are, playing for our team" he added smiling mockingly at me. By now my heart is sinking, I want to yell at them and ask them why they have her and to fucking let her go, but I can't. I need to carry on with the plan.
I stayed silent, I didn't know what to say to that. I'm sure she hates me and I don't blame her, but if she was in my shoes she'd do anything to get me out of it, in her way. But, it's me and this is my way.
****
5 minutes passed like 5 years and they still didn't ask me shit. Good.
one of the guys' phone rang and he went to the kitchen to answer it, the other one was looking straight at me, creepy.
When the guy who was on the phone came back I decided to speak. "You still didn't tell me what you want? I mean I can sell anyone for money, doesn't mean I want them dead. I don't do that dirt." I said calmly. One of them quickly came to stand in front of me pointing a gun to my head, "Don't think you're privileged here, you're nothing more than a money whore who's not in a position to tell us what to do. Because, honey, we do that dirt." His voice rang loudly in my ear, making my heart pound with fear, I'm scared that I might mess everything up. I should be strong.
I looked him straight in the eyes, while the gun is still pointed to my head I have to do something. They shouldn't know how scared I am, they'll use that against the both of us to get what they want.
"I'm not a fucking hostage here, you need me. I've known her my whole life, I know how her mind works. Nothing will come out of that little mouth hers even if you put a bullet in her head, hear me? nothing." I said still looking him dead in the eyes with no emotions on the surface what-so-ever. He did what I expected, pointing the to her head instead. She screamed in fear, my heart broke to pieces to see her that way, I need to act fast. "BUT, if you kill her I won't spill a word either. As I said, I don't do that dirt. and if you kill me? well... I won't be able to" I said laughing a sarcastic laugh, I shouldn't show that I care if she dies or not. "So unless you want your boss who's been yelling at you on the phone earlier to do that dirt on you both you won't kill me or kill her as you need everything you can get, " I smirked, "So, put the gun down and be smart. Tell me what you want." My tone has changed to a cold one saying that. They were both furious by now because they know that it's true and they want us both dead so badly but they can't do it. "you better talk or you're both dead." he said without addressing anything I had said.
"What do you want to know?" I said trying to make all of my facial features relaxed.
"Her father owed our boss money, and he wants it. Now." He said and I was in shock, her father is dead and as far as I know, he was broke before he did, her mother left her a sum of money that paid for half of her college tuitions before she left to live in Greece, and she worked to pay the rest.
"Oh, I know all about that." I smirked confidently.
