Its eyes green glittered in the moonlight. Its white-tipped ears pricked as it sensed movement in the undergrowth nearby. Its nose twitched as it caught a whiff of a particular scent.
Cat.
It slunk through the grass, keeping low in hope that its bright ginger pelt wouldn't stand out from the foliage. Freezing as a twig split precariously under its huge paw, the creature glared through the trees at the lean, feline shapes before it. There were six.
The monster was hungry, and it wasn't willing to give up on easy prey. It continued to stalk forward as it noticed they hadn't heard the branch's sickening snap.
Tracking their path, the animal realised the cats were heading toward a large river. They would have to swim across if they were heading to the other side.
The perfect chance to ambush.
The plan lay itself out before the creature's eyes: The cats swimming through the river, their paws splashing frantically through the current; the beast lunging out at them with gnashing jaws and bared talons, pulling them underwater and tearing them apart.
As its mind flashed back to the present, a growl rose in its throat as its eyes narrowed to slits and it drew its long tongue over its jaws with hunger.
The first cat, a huge black tom with glittering green eyes hopped in first, swimming nimbly across, followed by a second black tom with a few white patches.
It would have to attack quickly if it was going to catch anything.
Making its way through the dense vegetation, it stopped at the forest's edge, glaring out into the shining blue depths of the river, which curved around a steep hill and vanished into the shadows beyond.
A white-grey tabby dove into the rivulet, his head almost sinking into the water as he lost his footing in the deep water.
Now.
The monster sprang forward, springing from its hiding spot with a fierce roar, its paws outstretched and mouth gaping open, baring its razor-sharp, pointed fangs.
"Fox!" A small, black kitten yowled in terror.
