The days seemed to stretch on as the pack took off once more, with Jasper in the lead. The moon was at its highest, and its light guided their path.
Monty kept getting distracted by insects or rabbits, and Tonks had to guide him back over with her tail every once in a while when he strayed from the group. Marley however, stuck close to his mother, still shaking from his earlier fall.
Monty eventually gave up chasing the bright, red and blue butterfly he was chasing, and shook out his pelt, hopping around Homer's legs.
Homer yawned, almost tumbling over as Monty barrelled into his legs.
"You're quite the bundle of energy." Homer muttered, smiling down at the kitten and ruffling his ears with his tail. "Aren't you tired?"
Monty just shook his head, giving a toothy grin, before he continued to bounce around the legs of the others.
"Monty, leave Blizzard alone!" Tonks growled to her son, partly annoyed. He was examining the silver tabby's tail, sniffing it and prodding it with his paw.
"Is your tail okay?" He asked. "Didn't it get trapped in the rocks?"
"Almost." Blizzard replied, trying to keep his eyes open and smile. "It's perfectly fine." He flicked his tail away from the curious kitten as he continued to poke it.
"Here." Jasper suddenly spoke up. He had stopped in front of another cave, slightly bigger than the last one, with a lower roof. "We could camp here for the next few hours until dawn."
"As long as this one doesn't cave in and crush us all." Venus flinched as she remembered how Echo had been pulverised by mounds of debris, and Homer touched his nose to her ear comfortingly.
Monty instantly bounded inside, gazing around at the walls. Although it was just a simple, dark cave, to Monty it was a play area, a brand new adventure to explore. Marley and Tonks followed shortly after, choosing a place to curl up in the corner. Blizzard instantly flopped to the ground at a random spot in the cave, immediately falling asleep. Venus lay beside him, curling her tail around her nose and flicking snowflakes away. Homer sat close by, gazing at Monty as he hopped around, eventually settling to the ground.
Jasper sat by the entrance, staring out into the infinite snow and forest. His ears pricked backward as conversation buzzed behind him.
"Get some sleep Monty." Homer murmured affectionately.
"Okay!" Monty squealed back; Jasper heard a rustling sound as Monty curled into a ball. "Goodnight Dad."
Jasper's eyes widened. He turned, looking over his shoulder at his sleeping son. Was he talking to him? Only then did Jasper notice with shock that Monty had his slowly-closing eyes fixed on Homer, grinning joyfully as he drifted to sleep.
He had called Homer 'Dad.'
