CHAPTER 13
Above us, Loki flew across my field of vision on a Chitauri chariot, flanked by a dozen or so Chitauri warriors. Steve, Clint, Natasha and I ran a few feet to take cover from the ongoing fire from the Chitauri firing down onto the street from the buildings, shielding ourselves behind an upturned cab. A sudden flurry of explosions at the end of the street startled me out of my reverie of shock, and I looked up to see my father taking his band of warriors down the street, shooting down below at buildings and parked cars, setting off a chain of fiery explosions. The explosions finished off in one final conflagration of fire. People were running, terrified, away from Loki, but also towards the gunfire of the aliens. Cap looked down across the bridge.
"Those people need assistance down there."
A blue energy beam interrupted him, and Nat jumped into action, firing right back, guns blazing. Clint military rolled behind another upturned vehicle and began shooting arrows into the oncoming Chitauri.
Nat paused for a brief moment to shout at Steve, "We got this, It's good. Go!"
Steve turned to Clint and asked "You think you can hold them off?"
"Captain." Clint pulled a trigger on his bow; an arrowhead was mechanically spun and chosen. "It would be my genuine pleasure." Clint pulled an arrow from his quiver at lightning speed, and shot an oncoming Chitauri in the head without even turning around to look at his target, buying Cap some time to get to the edge of the bridge.
"Cassidy, with me!" Cap ordered, and I gave him a quick salute, before jumping down off the bridge, followed by a fireball from an explosion back where we were standing a moment ago. Cap and I ran over to the plaza, and let me tell you, that man runs like a goddamn cheetah. In order to keep up with the Super-Soldier, I had to actually use a small amount of my super-speed, my body moving faster than the average person. Instead of moving out the way of oncoming obstructions, we just leaped over them.
As we ran, I saw from the corner of my eye a bus; It's doors jammed shut by the angle they had been distorted to, probably by a nearby explosion.
"Steve, I'll catch you up!" I yelled as I skidded to a stop, my boots squeaking slightly at the abruptness of my stopping. I sped over to the bus, and flew up off the ground slightly so I was at the direct height of the bus' windows. "Children first! Pass them to me!" All the young people stuck inside the bus were helped out of the windows into my arms one by one, and I flew them gently down to the ground. The last child out of the bus was a young baby, no more than a few months old. I handed the baby to her older sister and told all of them; "Alright, you guys stay put, I'm gonna help your parents, okay?"
Moving over to the jammed doors, I used my strength to pull them straight off the bus, the doors flying through the air, and landing behind me with a loud clang. The adults began to run out, and the parents ran straight to their children. I didn't stop for thanks from people, but instead I just left and blurred over to the plaza to catch up with Steve.
I got there just as Cap was giving orders to a group of NY policemen.
"...need men in these buildings. There are people inside that can run into the line of fire. You keep them off the streets. I need a perimeter as far back as 39th."
"You can take them out through the basement or through the subway." I chipped in, levitating up to his level.
"Why the hell should we take orders from you?" The sergeant said scathingly, obviously not taking us seriously.
"Okay bozo, do you not know who this guy is?" I said, seething at the ignorance of the so called law enforcement of America. Suddenly, an explosion comes from behind us. Cap blocked the oncoming energy blasts with his shield, and I throw up a forcefield, which reflects the blasts back at the Chitauri who originally fired them, one being hit with his own energy beam.
Two Chitauri soldiers attack Steve, and another three attacked me. I ducked under the energy beam one shot at me, and I knocked them out cold with a quickly timed uppercut to the jaw. I then 'summoned' a set of twin blades, and spun around at high speed, the sword outstretched, and separated their heads from the rest of their bodies. Cap finished fighting off his attackers at the same time the bodies of the decapitated Chitauri fell to the floor.
The officers had been watching in shock, their jaws practically on the floor as they watched the pair of us fight off the Chitauri.
The sergeant turned to his officers, "I need men in those buildings, lead the people down and away from the streets. I need a perimeter as far back as 39th street." I smirked as he repeated the order into his radio, pleased that he had stopped being so ignorant and decided to do the right thing.
Another explosion from back where we had left Clint and Nat drew our gazes, and we looked at each other before rushing back to assist them.
