The blast of cold wind as I ran was crippling, reminding me of just how warm it had been inside. I daren’t slow down though. How long until Adam transformed? Minutes? Seconds? It took me far too long to find the weapon stash, the full moon doing little to nothing to help guide me. It had been dark inside the party but this was darker. The trees behind Sarah’s house were thick and blocked out most of the light. I would have to resort to mostly instinct to track down Adam.
Then again, perhaps fate was on my side. The ground underfoot was squelchy and soft. At first I had been annoyed by the fact it was slowing me down, even with my combat boots, but that was until I spotted the footprints. Two pairs up ahead-barely visible but that’s all I needed.
Hang on…two pairs?
Before I had a chance to process this properly, I felt a hand on my shoulder. My response was lightning quick. I barely gave the person the chance to blink before my sword was at their throat.
“Hey, watch it!” I could make out Scott’s eyes through the darkness, wide and white. Letting out a breath I didn’t know I’d been holding, I lowered the sword.
“What do you think you’re doing? I almost ran you through.”
“I’m aware of that,” he glared, “I came out here to help of course. Our weapon stash was gone so I assumed you took it. Have you found her yet?” In my rush to leave, I’d taken the whole bag with me. Dropping it now, I zipped it open and rummaged around until I found Scott’s axe. Then, deciding I might not get the chance later, I also threw on my hoodie and gloves. I should have brought pants as well come to think of it. The tights were far too thin for my liking.
“There. Sorry, I was panicking. And no, I was just looking for-” I stopped mid-sentence. Had I heard him right? My heart began to thud in time with the distant drone of the music from the house, “Her?”
“Yeah, Anna! That is why you came out here,” he paused, “Isn’t it?”
“No, I was following Adam! Anna’s out here?” My heart sank. I’d naively thought we’d have the chance to attack the werewolf privately, away from all the party guests and long before it travelled back to feast. I should have guessed it would have brought a snack.
“Adam?” His eyebrows shot up, “Wait, you’re saying Adam’s the werewolf? Are you sure?”
“Positive,” I sighed, “Unless he’s taken to robbing corpses and breaking into my house for fun. Anna must have arranged to meet him outside because of this stupid prank she wants to pull on him.”
“Guess the joke’s on her right?”
“Don’t!” I winced, “Why does it have to be Anna of all people? And would it be so terrible if we left her?” Scott laughed, the sound oddly eerie in the silent forest.
“Now there’s the compassionate Alex I love so much.”
“Shut up! We need to move, now. Anna cannot see a werewolf, let alone be eaten by one.” We fell silent again, both of us listening for any unpleasant ripping sounds that might tell us we were too late. As much as I loathed Anna, I didn’t really want her to be eaten. It was vital we got there before Adam transformed.
“We should go that way.” Scott pointed through the trees, his axe slung over his shoulder. The metal glinted reassuring in the moonlight. I shrugged and nodded, indicating for him to lead. The adrenaline was definitely pumping now.
“So are you going to apologise then?” He whispered as he walked. I would have preferred to stay silent so as to not lose the element of surprise but at the same time, Scott’s voice was pretty comforting. It was nice knowing someone had my back…or front.
