A wise man once told me,
"Whatever you do, do I best the first time"
I was a child when I heard those words,
My young mind engraved them into my actions,
I was determined to live by that principle,
Life seemed determined to challenge that motto,
I was a teenager when it all started,
Being offered a life changing scholarship,
I was ecstatic.
Life decided to send laziness.
I became the ambassador for all couch potatoes,
My books I shunned,
And took refuge in television,
But Life wasn't through with me.
She sent me an early Easter gift.
Distraction.
Distraction in every form possible was hauled at me.
Friends.
Parties.
And the worst of them, boys.
He came into my life in the guise of innocence,
And introduced me to different pleasures I was not ready for,
I did not have the courage to push him away,
I did not have the courage to push any of them away.
But my mother did,
With one piece of advice,
They were all gone in a flash.

"Time is money
Make each dime count
Once a dime is gone
Do not expect it back
Why allow it go?
Who knows?
It could be the golden dime you've been waiting for"

With the little strength I gained,
I pushed very hard,
Now I'm an adult,
And delighted to know that my children will not lack,
And I'm even more happy,
That these life lessons,
I will pass on to them.
