A snowflake falls on the shoulder of a small girl as she waits for the street lights to change. Her hand clings tightly to a woman who was carrying a small bundle in her arms. The woman looked over her shoulder at the dark street behind her as if she was regretting something.

“Mommy, the light’s green,” the little girl said, tugging on her mother’s hand.

“Okay, let’s go honey.”

“Where are we going mommy? It’s really late and I’m tired.” The woman looked down worriedly.

“Somewhere fun, don’t worry. Our house needs to get fixed so you and Veronica have to stay at someone else’s place for a while.”

“What about you mommy? Are you coming with us?”

“I will soon, I need to check on some things first before I join you.” The family approached a big red house at the end of the street. The woman looked at the sign: [town’s name] adoption center. “We’re here.” She knocked on the door and waited for someone to open it.

“Maybe they’re asleep, like Veronica is,” the girl suggested. The woman smiled down at her child.

“They’ll be awake, they’re waiting for us.” The door opened and they were beckoned in. “Wait here with Veronica, okay sweetie?” The child sat on a chair and the mother placed an infant on her lap.

“Okay mommy.”

“Ms. Laurel, it’s nice to see you again,” the owner of the center greeted when the two ladies entered an office.

“No need for formalities, Sarah. Let’s get down to business,” Ms. Laurel said impatiently. Sarah nodded and pushed a stack of forms across the table.

“Are you sure you want to do this, Christina?” Sarah whispered. “Your children may never know who you are.”

“Maybe it’s for the best,” Ms. Laurel responded. Her hands were shaking as she filled out the forms.

“But a child should never be without their mother, especially at such a young age.”

“You’re not their mother, I am. I will decide what’s best for them,” Christina said harshly. “Just approve the forms. The sooner I leave, the safer they’ll be.” She handed the forms to Sarah, “I’ll send over the rest of their things tomorrow.” She got up and left the office.

“Are you done, mommy?” the child whispered, careful not to wake up the baby.

“Yes, sweetie. Mommy’s going to take you and Veronica to bed alright?” Ms. Laurel took the infant from the toddler’s arm and guided them upstairs, to their new room. “You’re going to be sleeping here with Veronica, okay Ari? Make sure you take care of her, she’s only one.”

“I know that,” Ari yawned, “When are you coming back?”

“Soon, cupcake, soon.” She smoothed Ari’s hair back and kissed her forehead, then, reaching over, kissed Veronica’s. Quietly, she tucked a note under Ari’s pillow.

Standing outside the adoption center, she looked back, a tear falling down her face.“I’m sorry Arianna, Veronica. I love you too much to keep you, please understand,” she whispered into the darkness. She closed her eyes and blew a kiss towards her children’s window. “Just go,” she told herself, fighting to contain her emotions.Christina Laurel turned around and ran, not looking back again, not wanting to change her mind.
