She wondered, briefly, in the instance between the sea and the sky, a fractal of distorted stars above her, bursting in violent arrays, if Dazai would've said yes, if she asked.

Maybe he would've, maybe he wouldn't have— A part of her (the one that doesn't make it out of the sea), entertains that he does. And then the wind cut across her cheeks and the gun fired. She steps off the pier. She doesn't hesitate.

Eventually, there is a pair of black oxford shoes and a man who smells like nothing picks her up. Dazai lies her on the sand, her hair spilling out in a dark cloud, touches his knuckle to her cheek gently, softly, tenderly and folds her hands on her chest.

And then he's gone.

When they come back for the body, there is nothing but the sand, the sea, and the silent stars that bore witness.

Dead men don't talk.

By the time she emerges from the ocean, she has become a different being altogether.  She's a stranger in her own body, bearing the name given by faceless voices in the dark. A collection of bones and blood, eyes and nose and mouth that don't quite form a face. She looks down at the sea—

No one looks back.
