A massive gray cat lay in the darkness of his chamber, eyes closed. He was dreaming.
But it was no ordinary dream. The huge cat was receiving a message from StarClan through his dreams. Or at least, it should be StarClan...
Beside the leader's chamber was the apprentices' cove. There, a young tom stirred in his sleep. Unable to fall back asleep, he looked out, between the lichen that curtailed the entrance of the small cave.
It was still nighttime. He should have been sleeping. But he couldn't. There was something wrong with his Clan lately. Something very unsettling, but it seemed that it was only the young cat who noticed this.
Suddenly, a rustling sound came from the direction of his father's chamber. The light gray cat nearly jumped. Hurriedly, he ducked back into his den.
The leader of the clan heaved his massive structure out of his dwelling. The young tom found himself trembling. His father. The source of his unsettling feeling. All senses screamed at him to jump back into his nest, slam his eyes shut, but he stayed to watch the leader.
The massive gray tabby walked out to the centre of the clearing in the camp. He swung his head in every direction, probably making sure no one was watching him. But his son was.
The leader turned his eyes to the direction of the apprentices' den. His search light eyes glowed harshly and the darkness of the camp. If he saw the younger tom watching him...
The young gray cat slammed himself against the wall of the cave, out of sight, breathing as quietly as he could. If his father saw him, he was as good as done. The apprentice closed his eyes.
After a few unnerving moments, the younger cat gathered enough courage to peer out the entrance.
The clearing was empty. He thought his father had gone back inside his chamber when he saw the large silhouette of a cat disappearing into the shrubbery outside the clan camp. His father had left, but the leader would be coming back tomorrow.
The young cat exhaled forcefully, breathing laboriously as he went back to his nest. There was something wrong with his father, something wrong with his Clan.
Something terribly wrong is going to happen soon, were his last, exhausted thoughts as he drifted back to sleep.
