Trellis was an senior apprentice now. But then again, that came with expectations.

His father. The leader of the clan. The one cat he feared the most wanted him to be his successor.

Only now he realised the problem with his father.

He is dead, Trellis realised. The leader's voice was always frighteningly gravelly to him, and his gaze was so empty, it was like he was a walking corpse.

He is.

"All warriors and apprentices, gather at the foot of the RockLedge."

Trellis had no choice, so he stalked off to the clan meeting point.

His father stood at the top of the RockLedge, staring down at the small crowd of cats at the foot of the pier.
Trellis tried to avoid his empty, staring gaze.

"I trust you all have heard. One of our queens just had another litter of kits. Our Clan is growing bigger. And with that, our territories has to grow as well."

There was a collective yowl of agreement from the cats. All except Trellis. What is he talking about! Other Clans were obviously growing as well, but they don't expand their territory! He thought in horror.

"We shall claim the land from ThunderClan, in about half a moon. For their cats are weak, and they need less land," The leader growled, beginning to pace on the RockLedge.

The leader continued to explain his plans of invading ThunderClan territory, but Trellis shut his ears out. It was unsensible, attacking another clan just because of new kits!

The meeting was soon over, and the rest of the Clan spread out, to return to their dens, excited. The leader leapt down the RockLedge and to Trellis.

The young gray cat shrank a little as his father walked to him, towering over the apprentice. Sure, Trellis was taller and bigger than most cats his age, but he was tiny compared to his father.

"WolfPaw." The massive cat growled.

WolfPaw. That was his ClanSpirit name. Beside a normal one, there was a formal name too.

"I want you to show all those other apprentices how to finish a cat's sorry life." The dark gray tom snarled.

Trellis's heart skipped a beat. "F-finish? But... I thought... warriors don't kill--"

The Clan leader's massive paw barreled into the young cat's body. He was knocked to the floor in an instant, while the dark tabby looked away dismissively.

"That's if you don't need anything from them," he sniffed. "We need territory, and I don't think they're going to just hand it over."

This is getting outrageous! "But the ThunderClan cats never did anything wrong, and they're getting their territory taken awa--"

Before he could react, his father's unsheathed paw came swiping down across his left eye, which he closed in the nick of time, breaking through the skin. Blood filled his eyes in a second, the pain of the claws burning into his forehead. The young tom gasped and bent over, spitting blood.

His father's blazing stare burned into his back. "Mercy is for the weak, boy," he spat.

The huge cat left after that. Head spinning, eyes stinging, Trellis staggered helplessly towards the medicine cat's den.

Trellis staggered along the rocky wall of the mountain. He needed help...fast...

The young gray cat stumbled into enemy territory, but he didn't care. If their medicine cat followed the rules, he or she would give him treatment to relieve him of his suffering.

Trellis felt sick. Very sick. And his father had kicked him put of the camp, and told him to go along the path he had traced out for Trellis. And of course, he had to have a chaperone. A spirit called a Shadow.

The young grey apprentice gasped, for some reason he could not breathe properly. And his supervisor was not doing a good job of keeping him healthy.

"Sy...Sybrian, why are you not telling me why my father wanted me to come here?" Trellis managed.

The Shadow whirled alongside him, it's huge and glowing yellow eyes betraying no feeling.

Oh, that is because he just wants what's best for you.

"But... I...I'm literally dying here," Trellis gasped.

Seems like it's time for me to help you.

The young cat paused, ready to embrace the relief that he believed Sybrian would give him. But there was only more pain, then a numbing feeling in his mind.

"Sybrian... what are you doing to me!"

The spirit was wrapped around the cat's body, squeezing the life out of him.

I am but helping you, Trellis.

WolfPaw felt his limbs beginning to move against his will, and he realised what was happening.

I'm being possessed!

He struggled in an effort to regain control of his mind, but to no avail as Sybrian slowly took over his body.

Say goodnight, Trellis.
