It had to be noon, the sun high above them in the sky. The air was hot and you could hear it every time you stepped outside. This heavy heat did not stop anybody from having fun, though. Mr. and Mrs. Crisson invited Tyler, Mike, and Onity to join the family at their house for the day. Tyler's dad wanted to grill some food and Tyler's mother said the pool was always open for those who wanted to cool off in the water.
It was noon, and most of the family was over, and quite a few of them were outside in the pool. Rose, Tyler's sister, was in the pool with her cousin, the 8 year old son of her mother's sister. Onity and Tyler had stepped outside, Onity sitting in one of the chairs under the shade of the house, and Tyler taking off his shoes to get into the pool as well. The rest of the adults, including Mike, were inside, though they would be out shortly to join them.
Onity eyed the pool, sitting as far as possible away from it without looking out of place. He watched as Tyler walked over and took a few steps into the pool, shivering at the cold. It looked so uncomfortable to Onity, though the humans seemed to enjoy being in the pool. Low key he wished he could enjoy it, but at the same time it wasn't a big deal. Though the pool wasn't his thing, it made him happy being able to see the people he cared about happy.
"Rose! Tyler!"
Onity looked over to the back door of the house to see their mother calling for them. He watched as Tyler, with a slight frown, made his way back out of the pool he just stepped into. Rose lifted herself onto the side of the pool, saying something to the kid before walking over by Onity.
"Hey, can you keep an eye on him? This should only take a minute." Rose asked him.
"No problem." Onity smiled, leaning back in his chair.
"Thanks!"
Rose and Tyler walked inside with their mother, leaving Onity outside to watch the kid as he played around in the pool. This didn't bother Onity much. The kid had a bunch of the pool toys already out, including a few pool noodles and beach balls and some toys he was sure were not meant to be in a pool. He hopped around on his own, mainly staying in his shallower side of the pool, seemingly content enough to play on his own. He would sometimes look up and smile at Onity, just making sure he wasn't alone.
Onity sighed, looking up at the sky. It was pretty blue and there was a cloud blocking out the sun at the moment, though the clouds seemed to be moving quickly, and so it wouldn't last very long. He heard some birds chirping in the trees surrounding the otherwise normal suburban neighborhood houses. He could hear talking coming from inside from the other adults, but he couldn't quite understand what they said. He yawned, the heat of the day typically making him tired.
He heard splashing, and though not thinking much from it, he still had to look over just to make sure everything was okay. The kid looked fine, splashing around with a toy truck in his hands. He sighed, resting back onto his chair and taking a deep breath. The splashing continued and then suddenly he heard a cry.
He looked back to see the kid had slipped into a zone of the pool that had deeper water, and the kid was struggling to keep his head over the water. Onity suddenly felt fear, because he knew he was alone with this kid, and he knew that the others were not close enough to reach him faster the Onity could. He knew he'd have to face his fear of water to save the kid.
