My last day of summer ended so crazy. Just because of that one guy....

No way I actually liked him. I mean, I'd never had a crush in my life, why would I just start now? Besides, he wasn't that good looking. For a guy with six pack and a beautiful mop top hairdo and.....

Arrrggh! What was I saying?! Snap outa it Malarie! Do NOT turn into annoying Taylor Swift!

But anyways, school is today, so I've been trying to forget about him. I was just hoping he wouldn't be at the beach again, or that wouldn't be so easy.

BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP

*gasp!*

Ugh! Stupid alarm clock! Why does every morning have to begin with a heart-attack?! Because I can't wake up on my own, that's why...

I shut it off, took five more minutes to sleep, then climbed out of bed. I'd already picked out my outfit for the first day. A purple jacket I'd designed myself, with a matching white and purple hat, and white shorts (what she's wearing in the cover).

I put the outfit on, then plugged in my straightener. While it was heating up, I put on a layer if mascara and concealer.

After I was all ready and had eaten breakfast, I texted Clare.

Me: hey I'm ready tell me when ur at my house

Clare: k we're gonna leave soon. still thinking about that guy you saw at the beach?:)

Me: Clare!!!! I do NOT like him! it was just a random guy, ok?

Clare: ok, whatevr.

After waiting about two minutes, Clare's car showed up in front of my house. Clare and I didn't always carpool, but we liked to on the first day.

I swung my backpack over my shoulder, put my hat on, and walked out the door.

It was a beautiful morning, and the sun was bursting out of the clouds. I hopped into Clare's car.

"Hey you."

"Heyyy." I replied.

"So you have English first right?"

"Yup."

"I have math. Ugh!!"

We drove off down the little streets of Carlsbad.
(BTW, Carlsbad is a real place. Awesome town, love visiting it.) Our school is by San Diego, not too far away, so it took about five minutes to get there.

Our High school is a big, tan building with two floors. We have stairs, but everyone uses the elevator because we are Americans and we're lazy.

We pulled up to the school, and I saw a ton of people, a couple that I knew.

"Thanks for the ride" I said to Clare's mom. Soon, we'd be able to drive our own cars to school.

We got out of the car, and started walking through the grass to the school.

"I'm kinda nervous." Clare said with a worried look on her face.

"Relax, you'll be fine. I'm a little nervous too, but it will probably be like last year. And the year before that. And the year before...." But I noticed that Clare didn't look so happy.

"Clare... you alright?" I said.

She sighed. "well, its just.... You know that guy right next to us on the beach yesterday?"

"The one you kept trying to impress?"

She glared at me. "I wasn't trying to impress him! Well...now I am. He goes to our school, Malarie! He wants to talk to me more, but I really like him, so what if I embarrass myself?"

I never knew how to answer these questions from Clare. Because I had never really liked anyone, I never worried about embarrassing myself or anything in front of guys.

"Don't worry Clare. Everything will be just fine!" I said as comforting as I could.

She sighed again. "I guess you're right. Besides, it's just a cute boy. No biggie right?"

I nodded. I hoped that was the way I was still thinking.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The first part of the day went by slowly. My first classes were super boring, and I took a ten minute nap in one of them.

Finally lunch time came. I bolted out of my math class and ran down the hall to my locker. I didn't really care that I was embarrassing myself by trying to get to lunch right away, cause I was STARVING!

I turned the knob on my locker to my combination numbers, opened it up and grabbed my lunch. I shut it to see two brown eyes staring right at me.

"GaaAAHHH!!" I gasped. Oh wait. It's just Bertram. "Heyyyy Mallie." He said.

Bertram, or Bert, as I called him, was a kid who had been hitting on me since seventh grade. He was kind of a nerd, and loved math. He wasn't super annoying, but I have to say it did get on my nerves sometimes. Always trying to flirt, ask me to dances and things like that.

"Oh. Hi Bert." I said glumly. It was kinda hard not to yell at him whenever he snuck up on me like that.

I started to walk away, but he stopped me.

"Whoa where you going Mallie moo?" Why did he still call me that?!

"Bert, I wanna go to lunch, but... I'll see ya around." I tried to escape, but once again, he stopped me.

"Wait, Malarie, are.... you going to the homecoming dance?" he asked.

"Um, I don't know. It's not for a while, Bert ."

"I-I know, it's just... This year it's the girls ask the guys, so um...."

Great. He was hoping I would ask him to the dance. I'm not sure he even knows about the deal with me and my love life. The fact the I don't have one, and I don't necessarily want one.

"Bert, I'm not even sure if I'm going. But, I'll see you in History later today." I said trying to cheer him up. It seemed liked this happened every year. He tried to go to a dance with me, I said no thanks, and his heart seemed broken. Maybe one of these days I'll go to a dance with him, just to make him happy.

I met Clare by the commons area, and we headed to our usual table with the rest of our friends.

"Hey guys." We said. Max, Spencer, Megan, and a bunch of other people we knew were sitting at the table. I sat down, and started to eat my lunch really fast. I was so hungry.

"Hey Clare, Malarie," Spencer said.

I looked up.

"This is my friend Vincent. He just moved here, and he lives close to Malarie."

I looked over and saw the guy.

Oh no. It was him.
