Jared

I took my cell phone out to call Kenzie, feeling stupid as stupid can feel, wondering why I couldn’t just tell her, when miraculously, I saw her car coming back.

If it wasn’t for the situation, I would have laughed or smiled, but I almost felt empty.  I just couldn’t imagine how bad she must be feeling right now.

She pulled up next to me, and rolled down the window, “Get in dick head.” She said and rolled the window up.

I didn’t need to be asked twice, so I jumped in, and sat, this time, in her passenger seat.

As soon as I shut the door she drove, and put her music playlist on, not the same that I had heard before, but one with lots of screamo music, dubstep, and a few punk songs.

We didn’t speak for 40 minutes, but I continued to watch her, my body facing forward, but my eyes trained on her face.

I couldn’t believe sitting next to her that I had even heard her cry, as she seemed so strong right now, but what I heard had to be her cries.  They were terrible, ugly cries, that actually made me feel weird.

It made me want to tell her everything was going to be fine, that her dad was going to get better, that she…

“Chase..” I began.

“Don’t.” She said sternly, making me hesitate for a moment.

“Chase, I-“

“Jared, I will kick you out so fast, you won’t even know what hit you.” She threatened.

I smiled and watched her, her fierce strength over powering in her voice and her stern expression, but in some way she seemed a little different now, almost like a china doll.

“Chase, I know you won’t. “ I smiled, enjoying her facial expressions after I said that, “And I want to let you know that I will keep it a secret…. That you cry like a blubbering animal that needs to be put out of its misery.” I smile.

“Well shucks.” She caughs out a laugh, the threat of kicking me out hopefully forgotten.

“I don’t want to ruin the image.” I smile.

“Of course not.” She smiles too.  And even though I know it’s not real, I felt sort of glad that I made her laugh somehow.

“Tell you what….” I began, “Let’s play a game of truth or dare.”

“Not much to do for dares bro.” was her witty response.

“I beg to differ.” I said suggestively, joking of course.

She laughs and continues to drive.  “What could you possibly want to know?” She asked.

“Where are we going?” I ask innocently.

“WE aren’t going anywhere, I’m dropping YOU off at the mall.” She said.

“Where are you going?” I ask.

“I think it’s my turn.” was her answer.

“Actually, I asked where we were going, and I only know where I am going, so it’s either you tell me, or you have to drive in your bra and panties, as, well, you can’t do the walk of shame. So I will adjust the rules and make it a drive of shame.

“And I can drop you off, and make you do the standing in the pouring rain, and walking home of shame.” She bit back.

“You won’t.... so either tell me or strip.”

“You’ve already seen me in my underwear, wasn’t that enough?” she huffed.

“Uh.. no.  I’m a guy.”
