- Thalia’s Point Of View -

So my birthday in coming up this week. Ed said he’d be getting me a big present.

“You’re gonna love it.” He’d say to me, months before it was even my birthday.

“I’m throwing you a party.” Zoë told me.”

“You guys don’t need to do anything big. It’s just my birthday.”

“Exactly. Your birthday is the day you were born, which was an important day. It wasn’t just ‘any day’.” Ed hugged me. He makes me feel so important.

“Hey, what do you want Thalia?” Marcel asked me.

“Your friendship is enough.”

“Thalia, I just got a job, and I get money now, and I want to buy you a present. But I don’t know what to get you. so you have to tell me.”

“If you insist. A Breathe Carolina shirt.”

“Where do I buy it?”

“I’ll send you a link later.”

“Alright.” The bell rang, signaling that lunch time was over.

“Where do you want to eat tonight?” Ed asked me before school started.

“That Irish Pub in Knutsford.”

“Bennigans?”

“Yes! I always forget the name.”

“Bennigans it is. Who’s all coming again?”

“Me, you, Zoë Marcel, Dwane, Kayla, my mom and my dad.”

“I can’t wait. It’s gonna be great.” Ed smiled. The suspense is killing me. He keeps dropping hints. “Well, I gotta go. Don’t have too much fun in Gym class.” He kissed me on the cheek.

I laughed, “You’re funny.”

-

“Did you know, that if I tell them that it’s your birthday, the staff will sing to you in the Irish language?” Ed asked me, as we were on our way to the restaurant. Kayla had my hair done in an upside down french braid bun thing. So naturally, she made me wear something nice. ‘Why can’t I just wear skinny jeans and merch?’ ‘Because this is a formal thing.’ ‘That makes no sense.’ ‘It will when we get there.’ I ended up wearing a flowery dress and silver heels. Don’t tell her, but I’ll be taking them off as soon as we sit down.

“You’d really embarrass me that much?”

“You know you’d love it.”

I shook my head. All I care about is the food and being with my friends and Dwayne. It’s Dwayne’s last year of high school, so I want to cherish every moment before he leaves for college. I’m going to miss him so much.

After singing some Shane Dawson parodies, we arrived at Bennigan’s.

“I’ve got to use the restroom.” Ed got up. Yeah, restroom by ass. He’s going to tell the staff person that it’s my birthday.

“You like dessert before dinner, right?”

“Yeah.. why..?” I asked, as I saw ten staff members walk out with a birthday cake to our table. “You didn’t.”

“Don’t hate me?” Ed laughed, as they started singing to me.

“Lá breithe shona duit! Lá breithe shona duit! Breithlá sona daor Thalia, breithlá sona duit!” They sung, as my face got red, and Ed looked at me, smiling. “Is é seo an guy a coimeádaí.” Whatever that meant.

“C’mon, cut the pieces! I’m hungry!” Zoë rushed me.

I grabbed the knife and cut it. “What the..?” There was something hard IN the cake. Plastic…?

“Open it.” Ed told me.

“YOU DIDN’T.”

“I did.”

“THANK YOU!” HE GOT ME WARPED TOUR TICKETS! OH MY GOD! I hugged him. Best. Boyfriend. Ever. “Hey. I get the first corner piece, Zoë.”

“Fine.” She put it on a plate and gave me a fork.

-

“PRESENT TIME!” Marcel yelled as soon as we got home after eating. Wow I was stuffed.

“I wonder what you got for me.” I mumbled, as he proudly handed me the box.

“How did you know I needed new headphones?” I asked him. He got me headphones, along with the Breathe Carolina shirt.

“You’re always breaking them- so I figured, just in case.”

“Thank you so much, Marcel. Alright, who’s next?”

“Moi.” Zoë handed me on odd shaped thing wrapped in paper.. “I hope you love it. If you don’t, you can always give it back.” She said, as I ripped it open. It was an Ed Sheeran jacket.

“Nah, I’ll keep it. Thanks Zoë.” I put it on as Kayla was shoving her box in my face.

“Don’t believe what’s in the box.” She said.

“This oughta be good.” It was a box, with Mayday Parade’s faces on it. “HOW DID YOU EVEN GET THESE KAYLA.”

“I know some people.” She smiled. “But there is a catch. You have to take me to the concert.”

“Gladly.”

“Here.” Dwayne set a really heavy box in front of me.

“Should I be scared?”

“Nope. Go, open it.”

“Arizona Tea. A Beatles shirt. Candy. You’re kidding.”

“Nope. Go all the way to the bottom.”

“Keys…?”

“To my old car. I need a new one, since I’ll be going to college soon. So it’s just a little hand-me-down.”

“THANK YOU!”

“You’re welcome.” He hugged me. He never hugs me!

“Best for last, I’m hoping?” My mom set four boxes in front of me. This is a lot of stuff.

Sure mom. Yeah. I opened the first one. Iron Man footie pajamas. Fuck yes. Second box- two crewnecks. One said ‘HUG ME BROTHA’ and the other said “Me + Wifi = Love’ on it. The third box- movies. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Perks Of Being A Wallflower, Mama, Dark Skies, and The Conjuring.

“Hey mom… since it’s my birthday, and it’s not a school night.. you don’t think I could have four friends spend the night, do you?”

She scoffed. “I guess so… but don’t stay up too late.”

“She’s kidding. Stay up as late as you want.” My dad told me. YES.

“Thank you guys for all the presents! Grab a blanket and let’s watch some movies! Dwayne, you too!”

Best. Birthday. Ever.
