The way I interpreted the keywords into the piece is that those shadows behind him are a hallucination and illustration of traits he has yet to obtain/ is currently obtaining. He will need them to survive in the future. The faces represent the traits aggression, cunning and silent hate. And I think the thing with the hair and eyes is pretty self explanatory.
