I had actually caught her staring at Lucas. My Lucas. And the worst part was, she didn't even deny it. She didn't even try to.Maya was absentmindedly sucking on the straw from her drink, her cheeks hollowing almost immediately as her eyes concentrated on the blonde boy sitting only a few tables from us.
She tilted her head down slightly, her lust-filled eyes seductively narrowing as she continued to stare at him from across the cafeteria. Now, if anyone was to ever make sucking on a straw look flirtatious, it would only be Maya. Of course, everything she did always somehow managed to look effortless and purely exquisite. She was the queen of seduction. Myself, on the other hand ... well, not so much. Rather, if I tried to do half the things Maya could do with such ease, I would most definitely resemble a whale having a stroke."Don't you think Lucas is actually pretty cute?"
I whipped my head towards Maya, snapping myself out of my muddled thoughts as I slightly grimaced in discomfort. It was strange seeing Maya completely enveloped around Lucas, her focus only directed on him. I had noticed her gradual progression of interest towards him for these past few weeks, but ignored it for the most part. I didn't want to believe it was true. I didn't want to believe in the possibility that Maya could have actually liked Lucas.
I couldn't even picture Maya and Lucas in a romantic relationship. She took a particular interest in teasing and making fun of him, something I had only ever seen in siblings. Ironically enough, Lucas had the audacity to call me his sister.
She finally broke her glance, unexpectedly looking up at me as I slightly jumped in my seat, realising I had been too lost in my thoughts that I had not yet replied to her question. "Uh- yeah ... I mean, I guess he's kind of cute," I reluctantly responded, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible. Of course, knowing me, that obviously wouldn't have worked out so well.
Her face scrunched up into what I could only assume was a look of pure confusion and humor, clearly not convinced by my answer. She humorously scoffed, "You guess? Please Riley, you're literally obsessed with Lucas. Don't act all coy around me. I can see right through you." She smirked at me imperiously, readjusting herself in her seat before she flicked her perfect platinum blonde hair behind her back. I knew she was my best friend and all, but oh god she sure loved being snobby. Of course, she took great pride in that.
"I am not," I pathetically objected, knowing fully well there was no point in trying to go against Maya. She was headstrong, after all, and I was merely a little plant trying my hardest to survive in a world full of lawn mowers and bulldozers and practically anything else that could destroy a thriving flower like me.
Speaking of mechanical machines that destroyed everything in it's wake, the bulldozer in the pink sweater suddenly entered the cafeteria doors, everyone's eyes immediately averting towards her as she stopped to examine the cafeteria. Missy Bradford had a tendency to make a huge entrance whenever she walked into a room, similarly to Maya. The only difference was, Maya didn't feed off of the attention she received from everyone with some sort of sick satisfaction.
