Nicole's P.O.V One month later..
The last couple of weeks went by smoothly. Paul's been busy stressing about a construction project they started around the time I started working here. Back then they were only working out the blueprints but now they're working on the actual construction site. I don't know why he's working on the site since he has men to do that for him but I kind of admire that. I thought he was a give orders kind of guy instead of hands on but I guess he's both. It's nice to see a man that does things himself. You know what they say, if you want something done, gotta do it yourself. Anyway, I've been doing orders for supplies and filing papers for the past week while he's been out of the office. Unfortunately, he still finds a way to bug me, he would call in every other hour and send me on errands for stupid shit like food, or donuts to bring for the coworkers and himself. I understand that I'm his personal assistant but come on...donuts???
On the positive side, we've been getting to know each other better, like we'd have lunch and he would tell me about his friends or his future plans for the business or what goals he wanted to accomplish before the year ends. Although, whenever I'd ask about family, he'd shutdown completely and go back to being an asshole. I don't know what to think, maybe he lost his parents or a significant other? I'm not sure, but I do know the next time he disrespects me I'll shove my foot up his ass. It's like one minute we're on good terms then the next we can stand each other. I'm starting to think it substitutes for the lust we had for each other. "Aye Nichole, file these for me and have those supply orders on Paul's desk before he get back. That should be around three." Carl said dropping a stack of papers and files on my desk. I looked at him like he was nuts. "I'm still not done updating our clients accounts and the work your giving me will have me here way after the time I'm suppose to get off, which is in one hour." I said yawning.
Carl and I were able to put our issues behind us and decided it was better to maintain a professional relationship in the office and a friendly relationship outside the office. Sine then, we started hanging out on weekends and after work. When I introduced him to Miranda and James they clicked almost immediately, so now we all go out every now and then, but unlike Paul, he's not an asshole. "Just try to get as much work done as possible and whatever you don't finish, have it on my desk tomorrow morning." He said. I signed in relief and smiled at him. "Your my angel." I said teasingly. He chuckled and walked back to his quarters. An hour later I was halfway through the stack of files Carl left me when Paul returned. I looked up from my work and almost swallowed my tongue. Paul wore a white sweaty t-shirt, beige cargo pants, a yellow helmet, with a tool belt hanging out his hips. He walked over to his desk and dropped his gloves and a blueprint of the house they we're renovating on the desk. When he dropped into his chair, I went to go get a cold bottle of water and a towel from the kitchen and quickly returned. He was on the phone with someone so I was just about to leave and come back later. When Paul is on a important call it goes directly to his phone instead of through the office. When I turned to leave he gestured for me to stay.
When he ended the call, he tossed the phone on the desk and closed his eyes. I took this time to check out his body from his strong handsome face down to the small area of skin that his shirt reveled when he shifted. I love how he has a small line of hair on his stomach that dips low into his pants. I shuddered briefly then looked back up at his face. His eyes were open and staring at me. I felt my cheeks heat up from embarrassment but I tried to play it cool and tossed him the towel. "Long day?" I asked handing him the water bottle. "Thanks. And yeah very long. We were taking down the outside garage today so we could remake it with brick. We were almost done until I realized the bricks weren't even glued together properly. When I pushed against it the whole fucking garage collapsed. A somewhat new guy admitted to doing the half ass job. Normally I would have just warned him and lectured him on the proper way to lay bricks but I was pissed since one caught me on my forearm." He said and showed me his bruise. "Oh my god! Does it hurt? Are you alright?" I asked. How the hell did I miss that? I walked around his desk and grabbed his arm to examine it. "I'm fine Nichole." He said kind of annoyed. He always got annoyed when I got 'dramatic'. I gave him my 'no bullshit' look. "Don't give me that damn look, I said I'm fine." He growled. I rolled my eyes and got up to go back to my desk. He grabbed my arm and and positioned me back against the desk. We stared at each other for a minute. "What about you? Long day?" He asked as he rotated his neck and shoulders. "No, not as long as yours." I said. "Unfortunately, it's about to get longer. I need you to come to my place and go over some paper work I need ready for a conference that's going to be held tomorrow morning." I was about to respond but my phone started to play my Taylor swift ringtone that was specifically for my ex James.
Why did I still have his number I don't know. When I answered my phone, I got angry unexpectedly. "Hello Nicky." James said. The sound of his voice made me shudder with disgust and anger. "What the fuck do you want?!" I growled angrily. Paul raised his eyebrow at me in question. I mouthed to him that I it was my ex on the phone. He nodded in understanding. "Easy sweetheart. I was just calling to see how your doing. I miss you." He whined pathetically. I started pacing back and forth. "You mean after you ran off with everything I owned?! Or after the divorce was final?" I said doing my best not to raise my voice. He was saying something but I ignored him when I heard a female voice in the background. Is he fucking serious?! I was about to lose my patience when Paul came up behind me and started massaging my shoulders. I stopped pacing and blushed everywhere. He moved his lips next to my ear and whispered for me to relax. "Hello? Nicky?" James said grabbing my attention. "Uh, yeah.. Sorry, what?" I asked briefly distracted. "Are you with someone?! Nicky I swear t-" Who the fuck... I pulled the phone away from my ear and heard the same voice somewhere in the office. Paul walked outside of our office and said "James, man relax. I can hear you all the way in here." I stood in shock as I registered what I just heard. When Paul returned he snapped me out of it and said something that didn't register in my head. "That's my...my ex husband." I whispered.
