Nicole's P.O.V   3 Months ago...

"Alright, I'm going home, its getting late." My best friend Miranda said as she reached for her wallet. "Oh no you don't. You paid last time we went out, and for dinner before that." I said taking her wallet from her as I retrieved my own card. The waiter came over with the bill and took my card before walking off. I finished my wine as Miranda gathered our leftovers. "Yeah I know. I just feel like I'm free loading off of you after quitting my job recently." she said. I gave her a look so she knew how ridiculous that sounded. "You of all people shouldn't feel that way. Especially with me. You're my girl, I'd pay for you even if you were the richest woman alive." I said as I watched the waiter stroll back over to our table. "I'm sorry ma'am. Your card declined." he said. I frowned as he returned my card. "There has to be some sort of mistake, there's enough money on there to pay rent for a whole year." I told Miranda. "Here, use my card. And don't worry, you can take care of the bill the next time we go out." she said, handing the waiter her credit card. "That still doesn't explain why my card declined." I said to her.

After the waiter came back with Miranda's card without any problems, we left the restaurant. We said our goodbyes and then slowly but surely, I got into my black Nissan Altama and called my husband James. The call went straight to voicemail after the first ring. I sighed. James usually has his phone on Do Not Disturb or silent despite our numerous conversations about it. I started up my car and drove home. Upon arrival I frowned noticing the empty parking space which is usually occupied by James' car. Where was he? Its almost midnight. After parking I dialed his number again as I went to unlock the front door. In the next instance, I was in shock. As I opened the door, it revealed a clean, deserted house with not a single piece of furniture in sight.  At that moment James decided to pick up the phone. "Hello?" he said. When my lungs were operating again, I inhaled deeply, gathering all my patience before I spoke. "James.. where the hell is all of our furniture? And where are you?!" I yelled, failing miserably at self control. "Yeah, about that... Listen we aren't working out baby.  I was going to tell you earlier but things kept coming up. I'm not happy in this marriage. Quite frankly, I'm bored with you so I moved out." He responded nonchalantly. I couldn't breathe. What the fuck? Where was this coming from? "I don't understand...wait is that why my card declined?! You son of a bi-" I said screaming into the phone but he cut me off with a simple "Goodbye Nicky." then the line went dead. I dropped the phone in shock. This can't be happening. This was just too bizarre. I slowly closed the door behind me as I continued to look around as if the furniture would suddenly reappear.....  And just like that, my world changed..dramatically.
