I was dressed in all green. My dress the same as the parade yet shorter. Green was my favorite color by far and I was glad it was my districts. Today was the interviews. Training was over. Tomorrow I would be thrown into the unforgiving arena.
I played with one of my tight curls as I waited in line. I was one of the last to go on with only three others after me. Adam looked confidant, like always. He was fearless. That would probably get him killed later on.
The line was getting shorter and I was up next. My stomach hurt and I was petrified. The announcer is Zane Jekyll. A very lively man in his early forties with bright blue hair. He was very outgoing and I loved that about him.
"Next up, we have the adorable Miss Brooke Parker!"
I took one last deep breath. I walk on stage, the lights shining brightly on me. If I've learned anything it's how to play the cameras. I give my cutest and most innocent smile. That should butter them up.
"Hi Mr. Zane!" I say in a cute voice. The crowd respond with many "awes". It was working. I sit down and wait for the first question. I glance over still holding a smile to see Zane quickly arranging note cards.
"Now Brooke, why do you think this is the only way to avenge your brother?"
I look at him confused. Brother? What on earth is he talking about? "Sir, I don't have a brother. Only a sister."
"Oh my apologies! I mixed up the cards! Tell me about your sister then."
"Well, she's basically my other half. Her name is Willow and she's my best friend. We look like we could be twins." I say, hoping Willow is watching.
"Lovely, lovely. Now what's your favorite part about your district?"
"The birds and the abundance of beautiful fruit trees. I love that."
"How has the Capitol been treating you, Miss Brooke?"
"It's wonderful here! The food is excellent and everything is so amazing!"
"Is there anything you want to say to anyone one last time? Just in case."
I turn to the cameras with tears in my eyes. "Mom, dad, and Willow. I love you each so much. You will be in my thoughts always. And if I should die, know that I did it for the sake of Panem and that you three will be my last thought before my last breath."
I heard a few awes and sobs from the audience. I was playing the game just right. I knew they were watching my every move. Zane ended the interview with one final question, "Who will you miss most?"
"My family. They are the most important people in the world to me. Without them, I'd be nothing."
With that, I am thanked and Adam is called in. I think that went well. Now I must prepare for tomorrow. The day I enter the arena.
