It was August 30th 1939, the sun was scorching in the garden where Lizzie Best and Ruby Edwards were sunbathing. Lizzy had bleach bblonde hair in victory rolls, huge sunglasses and a polka dot red dress. Ruby had black hair in curls, bright blue eyes and a dress with a white top half with black dots and a blue skirt as the bottom half.
"so, do you want to go to the Queen's head?" asked Lizzie
"I told you Liz, I'm not drinking!"
"oh don't be an old fuddy-duddy Ruby!"
There was a loud hammering at the door, Lizzie stood up to answer the door and walked into the kitchen and there was another series of loud knocking
"all right, all right hold your horses!"
Standing there in his smart white shirt and tie with his jelled black hair was Jack, Lizzie's boyfriend. He was 21, a year older then Lizzie!. He was distraught and his face was pale and beaded with sweat.
"Lizzie," he flung his arms around her "you won't believe it, I can't believe it, its so unexpected and we've already had one!"
"right hold on, jack, calm down. What's going on?"
"there's gonna be another world war!"

Lizzie's face dropped, her entire body was overcome with dread, like a tsunami.
"right, okay erm... come in, have some tea!"
Lizzie had been told about world war one by her parents. She was born a year after the first war, but from just when her mother explained it she got chills. Now she was going to witness another one. Slowly she walked into the garden and Ruby got up
"oh, hello jack! What's wrong!"
"there's gonna be another war Rubes. A world war!"
Ruby had to sit down and all of the colour had drained from her usually bright rosy cheeks. Once she had got herself together, she managed to utter
"what are we going to do?"
And then she burst into tears and flung her head in her hands. A tear trickled down Lizzie's cheek and she sat next to her friend and said
"we're gonna be brave, and those bloody German's won't know what's hit 'em!"
Ruby managed a smile.

Jack indicated to go into the kitchen, so Lizzie Did. Jack sat down at the table and covered has head with his hands.
"I don't wanna fight, Liz!" he told her
"my dad fought in world war one. Me mother said he wasn't the same after that. I don't want to die."
Lizzie sat next to him and put her head on his shoulders.
"you won't die alright. If you do die I'll kill ya!"
Jack put his arm around her and together they sat there, in the silence
