Exams were over and we were finally on summer break. Lydia had gone to Manhattan with her mom for summer break. Today was Friday and she would be back on Sunday.
It was around 4 pm and my mom was still at work, my dad was back in Afghanistan, just as he had said and Katelyn was in her room doing whatever. I heard the doorbell ring so I got up and downstairs. When I opened the door I saw something that any child that has a parent at the army fears to see. A soldier in his uniform was standing in front of me, as he saw me his facial expression went a little sad. "Are you John Ambers' daughter?" the soldier asked. "Yeah, I am Krystal Ambers." I said. I was praying it wasn't what I thought. The soldier took off his hat and got down on one knee.
No no no no no no no...This isn't happening... I thought.
"I am very sorry to inform you, that your father has passed away yesterday evening in Afghanistan. He protected three of his mates with giving his live." he said. Something inside of me broke. I heard Katelyn coming down the stairs and I pressed my hand over my mouth to not start sobbing. I wanted to snap "That doesn't bring him back, does it?" but "Thank you for informing us." was the only thing I still managed to say, then I turned around and sat on the floor a few meters away from the door. Katelyn was just standing there, staring at the soldier, horror struck.
After a few moments I heard a car coming up the driveway. I knew it'd had to be mom, but everything was just blurry and I didn't hear much over my sobs.
Around two hours later I was lying on my bed, ignoring all the Whatsapp messages I've gotten about a pack meeting over at Scott. I was just lying on my bed crying and staring at nowhere in particular, Carl sitting next to me on my bed. I didn't wanna be around anyone right now, that's why I was in my room alone, instead of in the living room with mom and Katelyn.
Everytime I stopped crying, just a little, happy memories from my dad and me (even not so happy ones) popped into my head and I started crying again.
Suddenly my phone started ringing. I looked at the display and saw Lydias picture. I actually didn't wanna pick up but she was the only one I would have wanted to talk to. "Hey..." I said with a rough voice. "Hey, why have you been ignoring everyone's texts, we are worried. Did something happen?" She asked with a soft voice. I started crying again. Yes, something did happen.
"Krys?" She asked, worry overtaking her voice. "My dad." I sobbed. "He's dead." There was a long pause. "Oh my god..." I just heard her whisper. "Krystal, I am so sorry." "Yeah...thanks..." I just said. "Listen, I'll be home, as soon as possible, ok?" she said. "No, don't worry, enjoy your stay, don't be bothered by me, please." I said, not wanting to ruin her vacation. "Krystal..." Lydia started but I just didn't listen. "Listen, I mean it, enjoy your stay, see you on Sunday." I said and hung up. Actually I did want to have her here but like I said, I didn't wanna ruin her stay.
It was 11 pm by now, the sun was already down and I still hadn't really moved from my spot on my bed. I stopped crying but only because my eyes were hurting and there were no tears left. The pain had gone and instead there was this numbness inside of me, and I couldn't really tell which one was worse.
I heard the doorbell ring. Even though I couldn't imagine who would want something this late, I didn't care much. I heard muffled voices from downstairs, then someone was coming up the stairs. There was a knock on my door. I ignored it, not wanting to talk to anyone right now. A second later the door opened. At first I couldn't really see who was standing in my door, since it was dark in my room and the hallway was lit, but then I recognized the strawberry blonde hair of Lydia. She had a sad smile on her face.
Lydia closed the door. "Hey." She said. "I know, you said I shouldn't come, but I just had to." she added a litte sheepishly. But I didn't even listen anymore. I had already gotten up and now I flung my arms around her neck, burying my face in it and starting to cry again. First she was a little surprised, but then she put her arms around me and hugged me tight. "Shh...it's okay, I'm here..." She whispered rubbing little circles on my back.
It was so good to have her here.
