"Come on, Mister! You don't have to shoot it!" Alice reproached lightly, laughing. As she spoke, he hesitantly lowered the gun away from the pumpkin head of his snowman. She rolled her head onto the snow body. "There, we're done!"

Two snowmen now stood side-by-side, one with a sad expression while the other looked dead.

"Well, they look good by my standards," Rick remarked. She giggled and strode off to the edge of the island. She pointed, and he followed her finger.

Their next destination was a volcanic island, which was probably active considering the amount of smoke floating out of the top. "This is how we got here, by the way." Alice motioned towards a floating chunk of ice with a shovel on top. "And before you ask, I have no idea how this thing got all the way over to the island, but at least it was there. You can go first, if you want. I'll push it and go after you."

He considered this for a moment, then cautiously stepped onto the frozen platform. When Alice saw that he was confident in his balance, she kneeled down and pushed the ice floe out of the inlet.

"Quick, jump on!" he called out to her with arms outstretched. She hesitated for a moment, then lept at him. He set her down and picked up the shovel, paddling through the water.

"The portal to the dragon should be in the castle," she informed, eyeing the volcano. "If it isn't, I don't know what to do."

"Look somewhere else, of course," he responded.

"Mister, we don't really know where we are. I don't think we're even on Earth anymore."

The realization struck him cold, but he kept paddling. They remained silent until they reached the shores of the island, and the two hopped off of the melting platform. Alice picked up the shovel and gripped it tightly.

"Alice, how exactly do you know that the portal to the dragon is here?"

"Because it's how I got here." She paused, looking at the smoky pillars. "Also, I saw these shadows clustered around this one spot down there. They're pretty spooky." Rick felt a chill go down his spine as they descended the stairs into the island.

Soon, they were in a massive cavern with lava everywhere. It was also unbearably hot, even for Rick, whose clothes were already soaked as he and Alice scrambled over the black fence that encircled the castle. As soon as they did, Alice yanked off her sweater and tied it around her waist.

"Alice, I have a bad feeling about this. You need to hide." She shook her head and bounced her shovel around a little. He sighed and held up his revolver, eyes darting around.

The onslaught came immediately, with mages and ghosts and all sorts of fiery demons, each their own blend of pitch black and bloody red. All he could do for the moment was to cover Alice, who was bashing the life out of the spiders and slugs. And running away from the rushing mob.

As they weaved through the halls, Rick glanced down to Alice and felt his heart sink when he saw the circular burn on her arm. Almost without thinking, he slung her over his shoulder and jumped out the window onto the roof of a small room. He sat her down on top of it. He forced himself not to look back at her contorted face as he leaped back into the fray, blowing the brains out of a hellrunner as he dodged the magical fireballs.

A basic strategy formed in his mind: Kill the big ones, kill the small ones later. Thus, he focused his attention on the humanoids, doing his best to ignore the occasional sharp spikes of pain from the slugs and spiders nipping his legs. Eventually, all that were left were spiders.
