"Look! He's got a key around his neck!" Alice pointed out. Rick ripped the key off of its necklace, and they both walked up to the castle doors. "I wonder if the Wizard will welcome us with tea," Alice said innocently. He glanced back at her.
"What makes you think there's a wizard in there?" He remarked with a smile.
"Well, the trees are coming to life, and he has a castle in the swamp. Everyone knows that wizards live in the swamp for their magic," she stated, crossing her arms with a look of satisfaction. He laughed and unlocked the doors. He pulled on one, and Alice pulled on the other.
A rather ominous shadow appeared on the ground in front of the doors. The mysterious figure within chuckled. The two of them immediately got the message, and they slipped in quietly. The doors slammed shut behind them.
"Welcome, mysterious travellers, to my castle. What brings you here?" the robed man asked.
"Answers," Rick replied bluntly.
The robed man cracked a cold smile.
With a poof of vibrant purple, he disappeared, and a couple of armored ogres appeared out of nowhere. They looked around, then shambled towards Rick and Alice. She shivered at the sight of these disturbing creatures, but held on tightly to her shovel. Rick nodded silent encouragement before pulling out his sniper rifle and shooting them down. As soon as they fell, a poltergeist, a skeletal mage, and an armored demon materialized. He took aim and killed the mage. Alice smacked down the rushing ghost. Shortly after, there were too many for them to remain by the doors, and they dashed behind the pillars. The ogres served as a wall to protect the mages as the ghosts and demons ran ahead to fight. They fell to the shotgun and the shovel.
Knowing that he had to save his more powerful weapons for when the mages came out, he spread shot the wall of soldiers. Alice slipped around to distract the mages. One in particular was so aggravated by this that it ran up to her and swung its staff as she swung her shovel. The mage was much stronger than her, and so it knocked the shovel right out of her hands. She lept and tackled it while the opportunity presented itself.
The rest of the mages fanned out from the living wall and relentlessly fired away at the farmer, who dodged just as fast as they came. His own aim, however, was true. The tanks kept shambling towards them, and he killed those too with Alice's help.
"Where did you get that staff?" he asked her just as the wizard reappeared with two giant suits of armor with a pulsing target on their chests. The old man yelled something unintelligible and tossed a ball of violet magic at them.
Alice drew back, and Rick shot the targets, ignoring the searing pain from the bombardment of magic. One fell, then the other.
He heard a shout of surprise, and he looked to see Alice had snuck up on the wizard and knocked the staff out of his hands. She switched to her shovel and swung at his head. The wizard caught the shovel and yanked it out of her hands.
Rick barreled into the wizard from the side, and the old man dropped the shovel. Rick stood up and pointed his pistol at him.
"Alright, you lost, and we need answers. Why the hell did the world turn cubical?" he asked coolly.
