That was when the troubles started. He made friends with Paul, Harry and Nave(a group of notorious boys in the area who were engaged in unmeaningful work.
All that they did during the day was to play games. They were known as the "germs" in their area. After making friends with them, Alan's character and behaviour changed.
He would no longer go to work. He would hand over his shop to people to work and would not have any percentage of their earnings.
The most painful aspect is that because of his change of attitude, he started to spend more than he earned. His friends also wondered why he supported his aunty when her children who were grown ups could not provide for her.
That made Alan stop sending money to Mrs. McKellar. At a point , Mrs. McKellar was in need of some money for a check up her doctor had asked her to do , so she went to Alan to collect some money.
Instead of offering help to her , he drove her out of his house and spat on her saying ;"go to your children for money , Dumass".
Mrs. McKellar was hurt because she had invested greatly in him and cared for him as her child. She went to her children for money and fortunately they gave more than she had asked for.u
