It's Christmas and fans had received me as Yoongi's girlfriend a lot better than we had anticipated. This being my first Christmas away from home, I got to enjoy the Holiday with my new family: the BTS boys and their parents. Meeting Yoongi's parents was a great joy, his mother is so happy and sweet; I can see where he gets his sweet side from. His father is a little more on the serious side but knows how to have a good time, Yoongi totally gets his sparkling eyes and smile from his dad. Mr. Min is such a wonderful and generous human being, it was hard for me to fathom this because of his serious side. Maybe that's because Mr. Min and I have similar personalities! We're both very stoic and serious people but we know how to let loose and have a good time and toss out a joke or two. Mr. Min and I bonded very quickly over a couple glasses of wine and some treats. Mrs. Min and I chatted while cooking together, she was impressed with my cooking skills:
"MinHye, did your mom teach you?", she asked.
"Yes," I responded. "My mom taught me to cook before I moved out. She didn't know how to cook when she married my dad and taught herself. My mother is a brilliant woman, really."
"She must be very strong too," Mrs. Min exclaimed. "To have such a strong willed daughter like you, your mother must also be very strong."
"She's a lot stronger than she thinks," I said. "My mom is like French bread, she has a tough crispy outer shell but she's soft and doughy on this inside." I couldn't believe I was comparing my mother's personality to bread. What a cheese ball thing to do.
Mrs. Min nodded in understanding my cheesy anaology: "Do you have siblings?"
"I have two step brothers," I said. "One is my age, just a couple months older and one is 3 years younger. Both are married and I have an adorable nephew!"
"Do you have pictures of your nephew?", she asked excitedly. "And what is his name?"
I pulled out my phone and showed her the only picture I had of my nephew, "His name is Wesley." I said as I showed her the picture of a chubby brown haired blue eyed smiling baby. "My mom hasn't sent me anything recent. But I am sure I will receive holiday pictures. My mom and step dad are having a marvelous time being grandparents. They spoil Wesley so much!"
I couldn't help but gush over my adorable nephew whom I've never actually met. My entire relationship with him is via pictures or skype. It kind of made me sad to realize I'd never actually held my nephew and now I am living an entire country away from him. It's depressing now that I think about it.
"Oh, he's so adorable!", Mrs. Min gushed. "How old is he?"
"In this picture he was 4 months," I said. "He will be one year in January. My sister-in-law was already two months along when they got married."
"OH?", Mrs. Min was shocked. "Did they get married because of the baby?"
"No, they were already engaged before knowing about the pregnancy," I said. "It was just really good timing."
She seemed satisfied with this answer and we continued making mandu together and talking. She's such a wonderful woman, I knew I was going to have a hard time leaving their home. Yoongi's family is so full of joy and love, it was a little overwhelming. Everyone accepted me with open arms, despite my tattoos and heritage, they loved me because I made Yoongi happy. Actually, they were all interested in my Jewish heritage and being part Japanese. They liked my tattoos, saying it made me colourful and unique! Again, I was overwhelmed with this.
Yoongi had watched me light my candles on my menorah for 8 days and was curious about it. I gave him a short run down of Jewish culture and why we burn the candles for 8 days and celebrate with loud music and gifts each night. I could tell he was still confused but understood well enough to smile and accept it. I was raised Christian so I celebrate Christmas with my family still, I converted to Judaism in my early 20's because it just felt more suitable for me, personally. My Grandmother hated it at first but slowly became accepting of it. The rest of my family knows better than to try and convince me otherwise, it's useless. I also don't just burn candles in my menorah for Hanukkah or Shebat, I use it for friends in need as well. I will place candles in it and pray for the well being of my friend who is hurting or sick or both, it's a nice divination tool if you will. Speaking of divination, I also read tarot cards. I'm a very spiritual being, I can't stick to just ONE thing spiritually. I feel the need to explore all my options before landing solidly with something. It's like having a romantic relationship, keep your options open until you feel safe and comfortable.
