Dirk had escaped from the group before they even left the house and was now running as fast as he possibly could. He was going so fast, he was bearly dodging trees and fallen branches in time to avoid falling flat on his face, but even with his speed, it still took way too long to get there. John had told him where Jake was. Dirk remembered it well. The waterfall had been so beautiful while he was standing there with Jake. They had carved their names into a fallen tree before they left, and they hadn't been back since.
Dirk shook his head when he realized he had distracted himself and had been a breath away from running full speed into a tree. He veered left, but still hit his shoulder. Dirk didn't care, it didn't even hurt, not that it mattered if it did. The only thing that mattered was saving Jake.
Dirk's heart was beating wildly, his lungs started to burn with the need for oxygen and a break but he refused to be stopped. He sensed he was close, close enough to be heard if he called out to Jake.
" JAKE!!! ......... JAKE?????"
He was panting now and his muscles were beginning to ache. "JAKE, IF YOU CAN HEAR ME,  ANSWER! Please answer me Jake."
The waterfall and the log were in sight. In between them, resting against the fallen tree, was a figure with shaking shoulders, almost as is the person were crying. "JAKE?!" The running didn't stop until Dirk was coming up behind the dark haired person, "Jake?"

He stepped over the tree and kneeled in front of Jake, quickly inspecting him for injuries. After finding none, he placed a hand on Jake's cheek, guiding his downcast eyes up. Dirk's thumb gently wiped away a tear from Jake's face and the other boy finally met his eyes. Jake's hunting knife had been cast aside. "i- I couldn't do it, dirk, i just kept thinking of you and roxy and jane and i couldn't do it"
Dirk pulled the boy he loves into a hug, "You're ok, now, Jake, it's gonna gonna be okay. " Dirk let him go and held his shoulder with one hand, and placed the other on his cheek again, " I love you too. I never stopped loving you Jake."

Fresh tears began falling for Jake's eyes. He laughed and leaned in for another hug. Dirk sat down and pulled the adventurer onto his lap, arms around his middle pulling him as close as possible. Jake started sobbing again. Neither moved until the others arrived later that evening.

Slowly, very slowly, things got better. Dirk would tell him everyday that he was loved, that he was getting better, even on days he was especially depressed and didn't want to go anywhere or do any thing, Dirk was there, and he would open a window to let some light in, he would make sure Jake ate and took care of himself. Roxy and Jane would come by a few times a week and once a month they would have a group get together. The trolls and humans would throw a little party, with music and games and lots of food.
It wasn't happily ever after, there were still problems, mainly getting Jake to discuss the things that upset him, and then finding way to help. Him and Dirk had gotten back together, not that anyone was surprised, but Jake still had a hard time believing that everyone wanted him around, that people needed him.
