Most many men today are concerned about being a "real man". Society has taught them that real men don't express emotions, especially towards other men, and that acting even the slightest bit feminine turns them into a "faggot". You aren't supposed to participate in activities that cater to your interests, but what makes you look tough and masculine. Men who are weak, skinny, or fat do not fit into the athletic body standards that not only men, but women, enforce that make men insecure about their bodies.
Homophobia from men is partially derived form hyper masculinity. Michael Kimmel defines homophobia in masculinity as " the fear of being perceived as gay, as not a real man." Masculinity plays a major role in homophobia because men who are attracted to other men, a trait which is perceived as feminine by many, automatically makes you "not a real man".
This hyper masculinity also is what causes sexism and violence against women. It teaches men that they are superior to women, and that treating them as so also makes them "a real man". Masculinity equals superiority, and femininity is inferior. This mind set is what drives men to disrespect and treat women unequally, as well as keep themselves away from activities usually perceived as feminine.
We, as a society, need to stop encouraging hyper masculinity among men and stop forcing men into stereotypical standards, the same way we should among women.
