Thank you Aphrodite270  for the wonderful book cover that I will continue to use.

It has been two years ago, today, since my father was killed in the line of duty.  The memories of that day still haunt me.  Instead of crawling into my normally depressed mood at home, I am on my first plane ride to Los Angeles, California.  My best friend Mia rides nervously in the sit next to me along with four other of our friends behind us.

"Cheer up, Jun," Mia says over to me. "This trip will be great!"

I could only manage a sad smile.  My blonde headed friend planned this entire trip as a way to remedy this sad day.  I suppose it would not hurt to be a little excited for this well deserved vacation.

After five long, boring hours later, we landed at Los Angeles National Airport.  I was relieved to be off the plane to finally stretch.  We tracked our luggage to a conveyor belt and I waved down my first ever taxi.  Okay, so I did not exactly wave it down.  It was more like a good Samaritan standing nearby did it for me.  Luckily, the taxi was large enough to hold all six of us.

"I can't wait to see the beach!  We are suppose to be within walking distance," Mia exclaimed.  She was nearly vibrating with excitement the moment the plane had landed.  Now she just seemed about ready to burst.

"Calm down, Mia. Your shaking the whole car with your excitement," I said looking back at her.  We shared a laugh as the car rounded one corner onto a busy street.  There were people just about everywhere!  I had heard about California being heavy populated but this was unbelievable.  Shops adorned both sides of the street with giant, colorful signs.  The cabby rolled his window down at that moment.  You could hear the music some street performers were playing.

"We're not in Tennessee anymore, Dad," I whispered softly in awe.

While everyone gossiped about what they would do upon arriving, Mia reminded them the trip was to help me.  They apologized quickly and my face flushed with embarrassment.  Anytime someone mentioned my dad I would get red it seems.  It is not that it embarrassed me, but that I did not want anyone fussing over me.  I keep telling myself it's okay and that is what I plan on making myself believe.

We all became silent when the ocean came into view.  This was my first glimpse of it in person.  It was so grand!  The afternoon sun was glistening off of it's waves in a way I had never seen.  Our hotel, although not right on the beach, had a slight view from the lobby.  We all stood there for a moment after exiting the taxi.

"Wow." Mia looked down at me, "Look how beautiful it is!"

"Yeah," was all I managed to say.  The sight was giving off excited butterflies in my stomach. "This feeling reminds me of a few moths ago when mom told me she was pregnant," I told her with a smile.

I turned and began to walk in with Nichole, another close friend of mine.  Mia gladly followed as she checked us in and headed to the elevator.   We followed close behind and piled into the closed space. "Speaking of your mother, how did she take you leaving? She is eight months pregnant right," Nichole asked beside me.

"Seven months and she just told me to be extra careful," I looked down. "She was surprisingly okay with all of this."

"Are you sure," Mia asked. "She is pretty clingy to you."

"That is true," Nichole chimed in with a worried look. "You don't think she will get too upset with her baby?"

"It will be okay!  Besides," I added as we stepped off the elevator onto our floor, "she has Mark! He can keep her calm most days."

They seemed to ease off after I had reassured them.  Not that they didn't have reason of suspicion.  My mother can be overprotective and clingy at times.  She has calmed down a lot after remarrying Mark however.  She is pretty happy from what I can tell.  Though, it still bothers me to call him dad.  I have grown to just calling him Mark, and he seems to respect that.

We settled in nicely in our two joining rooms.  Unfortunately, our ocean view was about the size of my little finger between two other massive resorts.

"Well, at least the rooms were cheap," Mia laughed.

"I honestly can not wait to go down to the beach," I smiled while looking out the window.

"That's the spirit," Mia exclaimed with bright eyes.  She checked her phone for the time and sighed. "We could honestly go shopping or make the long trek to the beach, however, I am tired.  I think this hotel said it had a hot tub and indoor pool.  Wanna head down to it?"

"I'm up for it," Nichole voted.  I gave a shrug. "I don't really care what we do, but the hot tub does sound nice."

We quickly let the others know.  After a quick change, Mia and everyone were already heading out. "You guys can head on down," I shouted from the bathroom.

"Are you sure," Mia called back.

"Yeah, I'm sure," I yelled back.  I heard the door click closed and huffed.  My bathing suit was not what it used to be.  I had been trying all this time to tie the polka dotted tank top's strings and they had ripped completely off!  Now I was stranded without a bathing suit.  Luckily I had packed plenty of shirts that can act as a replacement.  Uncomfortable, but my Titans T-shirt would have to do.  I scrambled out of the hotel room to join the others.

The doors to the elevator slide open and I jumped in to press the lobby button.  Before the doors closed I saw an older woman who happen to trip coming down the hall.  I quickly stopped the doors from closing and jogged over to her. "Are you okay?"

The woman was wearing a green dress and had her grey up in a neat bun.  I helped gather her scattered papers that she had been holding close to her.  When I met eyes with the woman I was shocked to see two very different colored eyes.  I was so shocked that I just starred.  The woman appeared very kind as she smiled. "Thank you so much young lady!"

I realized I was starring and quickly stood. "I am so sorry! I did not mean to stare!"

The lady giggled as I handed her papers back. "It's fine.  I am surprised you noticed, many people do not."

"That's strange.  I find different colored eyes very fascinating!  It's a shame many people don't notice.  Though I have been told I notice things others don't," I babbled on with a little embarrassment.

"Is that so?" The lady eyed me before smiling. "That is good!  We need more people like you!  If you will excuse me, I have somewhere to be.  Thank you miss...?"

"Jun Kerryson," I told her before she walked away down the hall.

She smiled even bigger. "Thank you, Jun.  I have a feeling we will see each other again."

I left to go join the others.  My mind was still on the older woman from before.  Now that I thought back on the situation she seemed to take on a business air around her when I told her my name.  I didn't tell the others.  It honestly didn't seem all that important really after I had told them about my bathing suit predicament.

After the hot tub adventure, we all went to bed pretty early.  I slept like a dead weight, as usual.  Only the sounds of Mia finally waking me up did I realize it was already almost twelve in the afternoon.

"Get up, sunshine," she exclaimed happily. "We are gonna go shopping and we wanted to know if you wanted to come with us?"

Every fiber of my being wanted nothing more than to sleep away the day.  Unfortunately, Mia was not going to take a no for an answer. "Come on," she said loudly heading towards the bathroom.  After fixing our hair and adding makeup, we were off towards the shops!
