A Mermaid's war

Prince Kai

Today is the day that Prince Kai and King Marlin are coming to Atlantis. I am sitting in the thrown room with my father beside me waiting for their presence to be announced. I stare at the doors with my tired eyes. I couldn't sleep last night. every time I would close my eyes I could see the humans jumping to their deaths. Their bone chilling screams. The red water. It's all my fault.

I found myself fiddling with my necklace. It had a long gold chain and a turquoise crystal teardrop. It was my mother's before she died. I don't like to talk about it much yet alone think about it. The last time I saw her was when she was going to visit her sister. I was only five years old.

*Flashback*

"don't worry Kelda, I'll be back before you know it." my mother said as she ran her fingers through my wavy blonde hair. "Mommy, don't leave," I say as I hug her tightly. "Wear this and I will always be with you," she said softly as she took off her necklace and put it on me. I gave her a small nod and hugged again. I don't want her to go. She wrapped her long arms around me and kissed my forehead before she left.

Two days later a guard came bursting through the door while I was playing with my dad. "Your majesty, it's about Queen Morgana," he said breathlessly. My dad looked back at me and told me he would be right back and then swam away with the guard. A few minutes later my father came back into the room with a vacant yet haunted look on his face. He starts swimming towards me slowly. "Kelda... Your mother... she's not coming home," he whispered.

"Wh-what do you mean?" I ask with tears brimming my eyes.

"She was attacked by sirens when she swimming by the Bermuda border... She's dead." He said with a shaky voice.

I sunk to the floor. My whole world was spinning faster and faster around me by the second. I can feel my heart beating in my throat. My face stung with tears. My mother is... dead?

*End of flashback *

All of a sudden trumpets sound as the big heavy golden doors open to reveal King Marlin and Prince Kai swimming our way. My father got up from his thrown and swam down towards them and I follow.

"Marlin it's good to see you." My father said as he hugged King Marlin.

"Aquarius! It's good to see you too." He said as he hugged my father back and letting go bringing his arm towards his son,"And may I introduce my son Prince Kai of the Pacific Ocean." He said proudly as his son gave us a bow.

"And I would like to introduce my beautiful daughter Princesses Kelda of the Atlantic Ocean." My father said while gesturing at me and I give them a small bow. Prince Kai swims closer to me and grabs my hand gently slowly raising it to his lips. I can feel my heartbeat quickens and my face grow warmer.

"It is a pleasure to meet you Kelda." He says before pressing his lips to my hand.

"The pleasure is all mine," I respond quickly with a smile tugging at my lips. I can feel butterflies fluttering around in my stomach. What is this feeling? Is it... love?
