New School Day

School. Great.

A young human strolled down the sidewalk, backpack in hand for the first time in three months. At least it's a new school, he thought, I was starting to get sick of being in the same building as kindergarteners. As a sixth grader, he had graduated elementary school and was now starting his education in the middle school.

Maybe I'll run into M.K. or something. Hopefully I'll know at least a few kids in the new school. Maybe I can find someone nice to sit with at lun--

"Agh!"

The human gasped as he accidentally walked straight into the person in front of him. "Gosh, I'm sorry!!" He exclaimed, stepping back. The monster he bumped into turned around.

"Ah, that's all good! Maybe pay attention when it comes to crossing the street, though," She commented, gesturing to the road in front of them. "You kind of shouldn't cross when the light's red." Grinning, she held out her hand. "The name's Chara."

"I'm Asriel, it's nice to meet you!" He shook her hand, silently noting how soft her fur was. "Where are you headed?"

Chara sighed, shaking her head. "Ebbot Middle School, unfortunately. Howzabout you?"

"Me, too!" Asriel exclaimed, almost dropping his lunch box. Fumbling with it, he managed to tuck it under his arm. "Maybe we could walk together, if you don't mind?"

"Sure! I don't have anyone else to walk with anyway, considering all my friends from elementary school went to flipping Monster Elite Academy ... " She grumbled, adjusting her backpack on her shoulders.

"Oh, that sucks ... I dunno where all my friends went to, but hopefully they'll be around!"

"That'd be nice. Maybe I could wiggle my way into your friend group!" She chuckled. "Agh, finally, the light's green. Longest red light ever."

And so, the two new acquaintances crossed the street together to their new school.

"Welcome, everybody, to your first day in 6th grade! I am your homeroom teacher, Mrs. Herman. I hope you all have a wonderful year this year!" A weak cheer followed. Mrs. Herman cleared her throat.

"Now, today isn't a normal school day: we'll spend the day learning the rules-" -a groan erupted through the entire room-"-and touring the building. First things first, we have to take attendance."

Asriel looked around the class to assess his classmates. Much to his disappointment, Chara wasn't there. Hopefully she was in another class with him. But another girl caught his eye. She looked quite a bit like Chara, but with tanner skin and her short brown hair has less red streaks. She wore a blue sweater with two pink stripes, and looked quite friendly.

"Dreemurr, Asriel." Mrs. Herman's voice interrupted his thoughts.

"U-umm, h-here!" He called out nervously, and went back to rapping his desk with his pencil.

After a good 2 minutes, Mrs. Herman called everyone's attention back to herself.

"Alrighty! Time for the rules." She smiled. The groaning of the class could've been heard across the building.
