"Damn." She whispered under her breath, a puff of icy breath leaving her mouth. She waved her wand and it transformed into a crossbow, the wooden instrument disappearing to be replaced by the cold metal weapon. It fitted into her palm like an old racket, the feeling of cold metal more familiar than the wand could ever be. The woman steadied herself, looking at her surroundings. Two Nightmares and she could hear more coming from the stairs down below.
"Filthy WishGranter." One of them had growled, the moment she had caught up with them. She could feel the despair surrounding her right now, as if it was more than a solid block trying to hit her rather than an emotion. Evangeline swallowed, taking a step back from the two creatures. One of them was in his natural form right now, whilst one of them was in undercover. Undercover, as in camouflaged as someone's loved one. Probably to torment his prey before attacking. She could feel him trying to penetrate into her mind as well, trying to find a weak spot to exploit. Without further ado, the woman raised the crossbow, a metal bolt appearing out of pure willpower. With one quick pull of a trigger, the first bolt hit the camouflaged one on his chest, turning him into black, soulless sand instantly. A smirk appeared on her pale face, but not for long, when she felt someone attacking from behind. A punch to her shoulder was enough to make her lose her balance and her concentration. She stumbled and the crossbow fell out of her hands, a Nightmare kicking it away from her. The metal weapon spun a few times on the floor before stopping in front of the creature. The dark haired woman looked at the three remaining creatures, calculating her way out of the situation. She glanced at her crossbow, her only way of eliminating the creatures. Or was it? A thought came to her mind, one that Evangeline wanted to test out right now. She slowly moved her hand out of their viewpoints, a metal bolt appearing inside her palm once again. One of them growled at her, and threw himself at her, she could already the shining dagger that he was taking out of his jacket's pocket. Evangeline stepped left at the last possible moment, taking out her own bolt and stabbing him in the stomach. It felt like eternity, watching the creature turn into sand, even if it lasted for a couple of seconds. The other Nightmare hadn't waited for her to finish her job before attacking and she could now feel a throbbing pain on her back, most likely caused by a hit she had not seen coming. Quickly, she summoned another bolt, throwing it towards the creature's shoulder. It only made him angrier and before she knew it, he was on her, his dagger shining under the dim moonlight. She could feel the hands of despair clutching her right now more than ever and with a desperate movement, Evangeline grabbed the bolt that was jammed into his shoulder, thrashing it left and right. She needed just a few seconds for the poison to enter his system... His eyes gazed into hers for what felt like hours and then finally, she noticed his body disappearing into black, glimmering sand, the weight on her stomach no longer there. The dagger fell inches away from her face with a soft metallic click and Evangeline grabbed it, examining it for a few seconds, her fingers gingerly trailing over the patterns carved on it. She stuffed it inside her pocket, for further examination later. Slowly, she got up, looked down at her black dusted red coat before raising her head to look at the pile of black dust in front of her. She grabbed her crossbow from the floor and with a small movement, it was a wand again.
"Well, boys. It's really been a pleasure." Evangeline said loudly to no one particular, clasping her hands together. She took one last look at the mess, kicked some of the dust in content and walked away.
"Evangeline? Are you available right now?" A voice, clear and loud in her ear. Must be the HQ. It was almost a miracle that the wind had managed to transfer their message all the way from Denmark to where she was right now. Not that she was happy with it, a message from HQ meant that they had another mission for you.
"I'm coming." She muttered, swaying her hand back and forth to tell the wind to get going. She doubted that her message would arrive before her, though.
