It all started when my Aunt Sarah turned up. She and my mum are twins, but I can tell them apart really easily. That's because of my mum's scar. When she was seven, she got hit by a car. This is something I have never worked out. She was hit by a land rover that was FULL of people, and thrown halfway down the street, and escaped with a slight concussion and a lot of bruises. My friend Milly got hit by a van and spent two weeks in a coma before she woke up. She has epilepsy and a walking stick (one of her legs is permanently disfigured), and my mother survived with no permanent damage at a younger age?! It's odd, but I think it was fate saying "hey, you're only 7, I'm going to give you another chance ok kid?". I mean, how else do you explain it?
Anyway, Auntie Sarah arrived, looking tired and worn out, explaining that my Uncle Stewart couldn't come because he couldn't book any leave. Lilly and Charlotte were kid of hyper but they calmed down after a couple of minutes. Charlotte and I were sharing a room and so were Lizzi and Lilly (confusing or what?) but Sam -lucky devil- got a room to himself. Then again, if my room smelled like the indide of a dumpster and looked like an bomb went off in a boy's clothes shop, maybe I would get to keep my bedroom to myself. It didn't matter though, Charlie and I are more like sisters that cousins, I mean we have the same dark ebony hair but she has her mum's brown eyes wheras mine are vibrant green. We both love vampire stories and that kind of spooky horror stuff, nothing too gruesome though!
When mum put Charlie's tiny matress in my room, we were chatting about the Darren Shan Graphic Novels. Mum laughed when we asked her if vampires wern't supposed to blood kids and she went to find Charlie's sleeping bag. A couple of minutes later, Auntie Sarah came in with Charlie's clothes and bedding and we asked her the same question. She looked troubled and asked us why we wanted to know. We showed her the book and she laughed, but it sounded hollow and not at all happy.
We spent the night giggling and whispering about bats and vampires flying in through the window. The next morning, my dad took us all to the park to 'let off some steam'. Charlie and I hung upside down on the monkey bars and did Dracula impressions. That was when I saw him. He had grey, gelled hair that looked like a halloween costume, but was obviously natural. He wore what looked like a trench coat, and flared trousers with grey no-brand trainers underneath. He was wearing sunglasses which was odd, because it wasn't that hot, plus it was kind of cloudy, but I thaught nothing of it at the time. When he left, I noiced an electric blue poster on the telegraph pole near the bench dad was sitting on. I ran over and had a look at it.
FUNFAIR WEDNESDAY 19TH --- RIDES RANGE FROM KIDDIE'S TEACUPS TO THE STORM- RIDE IF YOU DARE!!!---
I looked at Charlie and I knew we had to go, all our friends would be there. After a lot of pleading and comitments to doing chores, dad agreed to let us go. He said he would give me £10 and £5 each for Sam and Lizzi. Auntie Sarah gave Charlie and Lilly £10 each, so we were all guessing what rides would be there, and who we would meet.
Little did I know that my school friends wouldn't be the only ones I would see at that fair...
