"Mom!!" I called bursting through the unlocked, partially opened front door. "Dad!!"
Closing the door behind me, I made a move towards the white, carpeted stairs. I shouted again into the emptiness of the sunlit, neutral colored house. Hanging onto the textured, oak railing of the stairs, I waited to hear a response. Nothing sounded or dared to move. In that one moment everything was quiet. Not a dog barked outside, not a peep of a holler from a neighbor, not a loud thud from construction. Nothing. A thick lump formed in my throat as I realized I was completely alone.
"They wouldn't leave the door open like that," I whispered to myself.
I cautiously walked through the hallway that held a memo board full of devolved pictures, reminders, and other memory-triggering items. Completing the short venture through the hallway, I arrived at the dining room. It was the same dining room I'd sat in this morning with my parents. We had sat peacefully chatting about unimportant topics as we munched on fluffy pancakes drenched in sweet maple syrup. After breakfast I left to go over to a friends house for a few hours, then I walked home arriving around noon, which is when I found the door open.
On the dining table sat a box. A small box, around the size of a baseball, with unrecognizable markings on the side. I picked it up. Feeling the cool tin against my fingertips sent a brief shiver up my spine. I lifted the lid just a crack. A ray of bright, silver colored light already broke out as if it where trapped in there for decades. Curious, I opened it more. Quickly becoming too unbearably bright, I shut the box with a fast snap of my hands. Setting the tin box down on the dining table, I stepped back letting out a confused sigh of utter shock. Before I could croak out a word of emotion the box exploded open releasing the steadily shinning light again. Closing my eyes, I blindly scrambled to slam the box closed again. I felt around the table for it but came up empty handed. Peeping my eyes opened a sliver, I managed to see the box was no longer on the table. It was now raised into the air by an invisible, though powerful, force.
Just as I thought things couldn't get anymore confusing a loud, yet whispering, male voice crept into the picture."Chloe, the worlds, the balance, everything depends on you! You are our savior, our legend, our goddess. From here you will be transported to Veldon where we have someone waiting to guide you on your journey. Good luck."
The box suddenly fell to the floor with a clatter. Immediately after, the light stopped leaving me with teary eyed expression from its brightness. Blinking away the tears, I had a second to react to what I had just happened before everything began blurring. The cream walls swirled with the wooden floor, the medal oven smeared in with a stove, and the kitchen table curled into the darker chairs.
One moment I stood in my friendly house on earth, and the next I was on another planet they call Veldon.
