What Must Be Done

Ash was the first to wake up. He had seen Serena take such good care of him while in his semi conscious state. Now, he knew that it was early in the morning and she must still be tired. He had slept for most of the day yesterday, so he decided to try to get up and leave her here.

He began to heave himself up, straining his sides. A lot of the pain from the wound in his side was gone. He was able to prop himself up on the cliff wall. Then, he pushed up with his legs. That's when it happened. The sharpest pain he had ever known. "Sh!t" he said. He never had cussed before, but now was more appropriate than ever. Ash began to fall down. It all seemed to go slowly. He began to fall, and reached out with his arms to stop himself.

Ash ended up landing on Serena. "ahh" he said as he collided with her sleeping body. "Ash..." Serena said shifting slightly and opening her eyes. When she was fully awake, she realized that she was looking right into his eyes, their lips almost touching. "Oh no, are you ok" she said.

"Yea..." ash began "accept my leg hurts like hell" Serena knew he must be serious. She had never heard him say 'hell' before. But she almost liked it. It made him seem like some kind of tough guy. But she chuckled at the thought. Nice, dense ash... Tough? no.

"Stay still" she said getting up and looking at his leg. It seemed normal, but the further she looked the more things got worse. His ankle was twisted in a way that looked very painful. She placed her hand on it and he flinched. She didn't know much, but she knew it would never heal in that position.

"This may hurt" she began. She would have to twist the foot back into place. She placed her other hand on the ankle. "Ahh... ohh" ash flinched again at the touch. 3... 2... she counted in her head, 1... She twisted his foot back into position. "Fuuu...." Ash began but his cries just turned into a scream that echoed around the cliff face.

"Wow... That hurt, bad" ash said. "Im sorry, but it wont heal any other way" Serena replied to him looking down. "ahh" ash moaned "I know you meant well".

Both of them seemed not to want to talk about last night. Both embarrassed, it seemed, that they took those events in a different way than the other. But they were wrong.

Serena had gone out, hoping she could find something to use to help ash. Possibly because she felt guilty for the pain she had caused him, or that she was just bored and needed a task to put her mind on. As she looked she found two bent sticks. Her mind began to form an idea. She could make a crutch.

She had also gotten a good sized piece of bark and taken her pieces back to their 'camp'. "This would do" she said to herself. She began to use the small sowing kit in her back pack to attach the peaces. "What are you working on" ash asked obviously bored. "oh, just something special, you will see" She replied. "oh... ok" he said and began to observe the tree line again.
