KIM’S POV

 

Nagulat ako ng biglan niya akong hinalikan. That time, I felt like a teenager being dated by her crush for the very first time. Masyadong mabilis ang mga nangyari. I was about to react when I realized that he drove himself away. After that night, hindi na kami gaanong nag-usap. We just talk whenever there are work-related stuffs. We’re both trying to be civil.

(Wala po kayong schedule this afternoon, Ma’am. Ipina-cancel po ng isang investor ang meeting)

 

“Nako, ganu’n ba? Oh sige. Thank you.” I confirmed to my secretary. Mabuti na lang at bakante ako ngayong araw na ‘to.

I spent my time checking and reconsidering the proposal of pediatric department. The OIC of pediatric department just asked us if pwede ba raw lakihan ang pondo for the foundation. Naging usap-usapin sa buong kumpanya ang planong pagpapalit ni Xian ng status ng kumpanya – from service type of hospital to profit type.

I begged to disagree with his opinion. Come to think of those people who are seriously ill. If magiging profit type ang hospital na ‘to, hundreds and thousands of Filipino men will not be able to be given the proper medical assistance. I’m not a doctor but I’m very considerate with those people who have no enough resources to cure themselves.

Napagpasiyahan kong maglibut-libot sa buong ospital. I left all my paper works in my desk. Pagtapak na pagtapak ko pa lang sa ikalawang palapag where the pediatrics is located, binulaga agad ako ng mga nagtatakbuhang nurses and doctors. Sinundan ko sila, and I found myself outside the NICU. Hindi ko gaanong makita kung ano ang ginagawa ng medical team. But the lady in hospital gown caught my attention. Umiiyak ito at tila wala pang pahinga. She was alone and desperate as she stares at the window of the NICU.

Nang may isang doktor na lumabas, nilapitan ito ng babae.

“Doc, parang awa niyo na po. Gawin niyo lahat, maisalba lang ang baby ko.” That was  the clearest statement I heard from her sobbing voice.

She was crying out her heart ng bigla itong nanghina at napaupo sa sahig. She started bleeding. I was really shocked but I was able to cry for help.

Itinakbo siya pababa sa emergency room. Pinalibutan din siya ng mga doktor. Bigla akong binalot ng takot at lungkot. I remembered myself on the same position 5 years ago. Those were the darkest days of my life. Hindi ko alam pero hindi ko magawang bitawan ang babae. I can’t even leave her. She was in pain. Pero kahit nasa ganoong kalagayan na siya, she’s still calling her baby.
