Carleigh's guest house party didn't fail to impress; although smaller in size it showcased no lack of polish. The whole place reeked of old money, and had the charm expected of any old southern home. Strings of lights hung above the separate guest house area each bulb showering the opened room with iridescent light. Music pulsed from the veins of the room where groups of students danced and spoke.

"Hey," A voice said breaking through my thought bubble. "Definitely didn't expect you to come to something like this,"

"Hey Kyle," I replied drily.

"What's with the sour mood? I thought you'd be happy to see me," Kyle replied his grin slowly fading from his face.

"I don't know, this isn't exactly my scene,"

"What do you mean? You're a senior,  this should be every high-schooler's scene," He teased with a lopsided smile.

With a quirked brow I pointed towards a couple whose dancing could have easily fit in at a sleazier environment.

"Well, don't knock it til you try it," He said with a smile.

"Like I'd ever--"

"Come on," he interrupted. "Let's dance, please for me," he asked with less than innocent puppy eyes.

"Fine, let's go," I replied.

"Are you sure?" He asked with a smirk. "I don't want to push you if it's not your scene," he said with all sincerity.

"Kyle, I thought you promised me a dance, let's go," I said grabbing his hand and pulling him out towards the makeshift dance floor.

One dance, quickly multiplied to many as an hour melted away in Kyle's arms.

"Kyle, would you save someone else a dance?" A guy asked with a lazy grin.

"I suppose it depends on who's asking."

"Don't be like that we're like brothers," the guys said before turning towards me. "I'm Asher, this idiot's," He said thrusting a finger in Kyle's general direction. "friend."

"Actually we were just about to leave--" Kyle said.

"Nonsense, I'm sure you can survive one dance away from your," He eyed my body before stopping at my face and licking his lips. "friend."

I felt Kyle tense up beside me as if he already knew how this would play out.

"How about you get all of us some drinks, and I stay with Asher," I said trying to diffuse the situation. "Is that okay Kyle?" I asked, before gently squeezing his shoulder.

"Fine," He replied. "But only one dance, I don't trust you not to do something stupid." As soon as Kyle disappeared Asher took his place.

"So what's your name?" Asher asked brushing away a stray curl from my face.

"Alexa." I replied as I slowly worked my way back into my groove. "Do we go to the same school?"

"That depends, what school do you go to?" He asked with a smirk.

"Northlake High School,"

He nodded in answer, his hands grazing my hips as the song, Like I Would by Zayn came on.

I turned back to face him. "You still didn't answer my question." He looked away before giving me a small grin that lit up his otherwise brooding face. "Maybe some questions are better left unanswered,"

"Well, what questions will you answer," I asked taking the bait.

"Well, for one I'm totally single and free to mingle," He said while sliding one hand through his chocolate locks, inadvertently revealing his baby blue eyes.

"Oh wow, I totally needed to know that," I laughed.

"What can I say it's important information,"

"Will you at least tell me your phone number?"

"What for? Alexa do you want to ask me out?" He asked playfully.

"Maybe I do, but you'll never know if you don't give it to me,"

"How about you give me your number and I'll text you,"

"But then I still won't have your number,"

"I guess that's for me to know and you to wonder," he replied with a wink before spinning me around. With little persuading I agreed to our "compromise" and added my number into his iPhone. "Thanks for the dance Alexa," He said before leaving as Kyle returned with drinks in hand.

"What did I miss?" Kyle asked handing me a drink that was everything but the water I desperately wanted.

Taking a cup from his hand I replied with a cheerful "Nothing," before downing the drink in one go.

<author's note>

Ohhh snap you just met Asher! Do you guys like him and what's with Kyle's edginess towards him? I've decided that I'm going to commit to posting a new chapter for this story at least once a month. (Which I've technically been doing anyway) I just wanted to give all the readers who've been asking for updates, a more definite schedule.  I start school tomorrow so it may be a tiny bit harder to fit in writing, but I will try. :)
