We spent at least a good 20 minutes looking for the blasted bed. Eventually, it was found lurking in the attic. Smoothening out the folded metal poles, a large, soft mattress was placed on top and a quilted duvet, complete with pillows and blankets. Of course, the weather was swelteringly hot, so a bed without a blanket honestly made me way too hot.
"I'm just going to get changed, hang on a sec," Orlando pointed to the bathroom door with his thumb.
"Yeah sure.... Oh Orlando, I didn't bring any pyjamas! I'll have to nip home quickly," Orlando put his hand on my shoulder.
"Don't worry, you can borrow something here. Just look in my mums wardrobe. Though...." His gaze looked up and down. "I don't think you're going to fit anything of her stuff. Maybe go into my sisters wardrobe? God, why are you so skinny?!" I blushed. Literally, I never really was conscious of my figure, but as soon as I opened the wardrobe, I knew nothing, not even his sisters clothes would fit.
"Orlandoooo," I wailed, in a crisis."What am I going to dooooo?"
"Here, try this," Orlando held out a small shirt. It was grey and not really at all fashionable, but at this point I couldn't care. Besides, I'm not really a fashionista either. Slipping it over my head, it slid easily over my ribs and abdomen. Even though it was slightly baggy, it would do. Orlando disappeared into the bathroom to change. Wandering around his bedroom, Orlando had a couple of photos scattered randomly in his largish room. One of him at his Year 13 Leavers Prom, one of him and his sister... His curly brown hair was never cut, only growing. It suited nicely, matching perfectly with his face shape and features. I searched a bit more, only to find a small NIKON camera, black and in very good condition. Flicking the on switch, I pressed a couple of buttons, to reveal the camera roll. "Sheesh!" I muttered to myself. Orlando is a good photographer! Flowers, people, landscapes, the whole lot. They were amazing. Then I came across a shot. A girl walking. Earphones in, she had mousey brown hair, fairly long. Her back was to the camera, so the facial features weren't displayed. However, even from the back I could tell.It was me.
A sharp knock rose me to my feet.
"Skye? Are you decent?" Looking around, I abandoned the camera on a window ledge and briskly turned around to face the door.
"Yep,"
"Okay, I'm going to get into bed now, but if you want to use the bathroom, go now, okay?"
"Sure, I'll just go and use the loo," Orlando walked in casually, whilst I stepped onto his carpeted landing. The bathroom was to my left and I strode in. Admiring how clean it was, I did what I needed to, but didn't want to leave in a rush. The place was so nice. Eventually, I walked back in, to see Orlando holding his camera. He was studying the pictures with great interest.
"Hey," I jumped into his bed and snuggled into his armpit. He frowned, then smiled.
"Hey... Weren't you the one who didn't want to sleep with me? Like, seriously, how long did it take to find that bed?"
"Only 20 minutes. And besides, I'm not sleeping with you - I'm merely wishing you goodnight," I hopped off his quilted duvet and slowly dragged the duvet up to my nose.
"I'm not complaining, you can come in," I smiled and slid beside him again. I peeked over his shoulder, at the camera screen.
"I didn't know you did photography,"
"Yeah, I got an A-Level in it..."
"Really? Let's see then," He flicked at the pictures, only letting me see each one for about 0.5 of a second.
"Oh! They look good!"
"Thanks. It runs in the family,"
"Well, I guess I'd better get to sleep," I yawned loudly.
"Yeah, me too. Goodnight, Skye,"
"Goodnight Orlando,"*****
The next morning came as quickly. I woke to see an empty bed beside me.
"Orlando?" I whispered, "Orlando?"No reply.
I walked down the stairs, to hear a rustling. It came from upstairs. Slowly, I cautiously stepped until my ears drew me to a small trickling sound. I smiled to myself as Orlando stepped out of the bathroom. He looked at me weirdly.
"Uh, hi Skye. Fancy meeting you here,"
"Yeah... I couldn't find you this morning when I woke up so..."
"I live here Skye. You're my guest. Why would I leave you?" I shrugged. He did have a point.
"You up for some breakfast?"
"Lead the way,"*****
"So, Skye..." Orlando poured out a cup of milk for himself. "I've got to meet a friend today because his roof is broken in slightly. You wanna tag along?" I looked up.
"I don't mind. Do what you and meet me in the cafe after, okay? I'm useless in D.I.Y situations," He chuckled, and his laugh was like tinkling little bells.
"Okay then. Cornflakes?" Breakfast was really nice. Orlando got out some flour, milk and eggs. Watching him whisk it, he announced he was going to make pancakes. We had a little pancake flipping competition, and mine got stuck to the ceiling. Orlando laughed his head off, before realising where he was standing in relation to the sticky mess on the ceiling.
"AARRGAH!" He screamed loudly, as eggy mess dripped into his hair and ran into his eyes. He fluffed his hair up to get rid of any remainders.
"All gone?" I wiped my tears of laughter away and nodded.*****
We got changed and did all the usual stuff in the morning. Orlando walked out of the door with his stuff, and I followed. When he stopped, his friend waved at him.
"Oi Orli! Who's that?"
"Skye! We're friends!"
"Well come up here quickly! My roof ain't gonna fix all by itself!" Orlando turned to face me. He put his hands on my shoulders.
"You don't have to stay. I mean, you said this wasn't your thing,"
"It isn't, but meet me after, okay? I only came because I live over there... Well, I'll see you later,"
"Bye Skye," Orlando lent over and hugged me. He walked over to a tall ladder and began to climb it. I stood for a few moments. I could smell his scent lingering on my clothes. I breathed his scent in. The air was silent.Except from the piercing scream that widened my eyes.
I turned around to see a silhouette falling, arms flailing, legs kicking. My hands went to my mouth in horror.
"Orlando,"
